Jean Perry was a loving, organized, opinionated woman of faith. And she was my mom.

Early Wednesday morning, she passed away at 90. With her age it wasn’t a total surprise, but we’re still in shock. She was a loving mother to four kids, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and was married to my dad, Jim, for 57 years.

She was so proud of her family. She loved giving her grandkids experiences: the zoo, the aquarium, the locks, duck tours, petting reindeer, trips to the park, Mariner's games, making apple cider on Orcas, playing card games and heated games of Ticket to Ride. Our family reunions, with everyone piled into one house in eastern Washington, were some of her proudest moments, and she was already campaigning for another one next summer.

Growing up, I remember her custom birthday cakes, tent camping, prepping her kids for impact due to her safety concerns about my dad’s driving skills, a complete dinner every night, Friday drink and peanuts and getting in trouble for hiding my vegetables under my chair cushion.

She quilted for decades, personalizing quilts, pillowcases and table toppers with holiday themes or grandkid's interests. She quilted until her eyes and hands could no longer keep up with her creativity and love for the craft.

She was opinionated and never shy about sharing it. “You make a better door than a window” was a classic when anyone blocked her view of the TV. She was extremely organized and planned for everything, including us. And with all the logistical challenges of handling her passing, we are so thankful for her unselfishness in being so prepared.

Her faith was a huge part of her life. She and my dad attended St David’s Episcopal Church in Shoreline for nearly 60 years, and until recently was still helping with the weekly service program. She attended her prayer group the day before she passed.

Her hearing and eyesight had faded, but she lived her life to the fullest, even if that meant using size 400 font and a magnifying glass that likely made the Hubble telescope jealous.

I’m so thankful for every day with my mom. And don’t worry, Mom. We’ll take care of Dad. Love you.

6:30 AM. Rogue Community College. And a whole lot of volleyball experience in one gym. 🏐

This morning brought together an incredible network of volleyball knowledge and experience:

🏐 1 RISE Director
🏐 1 RCC Volleyball Head Coach
🏐 1 RCC Assistant Coach
🏐 6 RISE Coaches
🏐 2 former collegiate athletes — D1 & NAIA
🏐 1 former Head Coach at Umpqua Community College
🏐 2 RISE alumnae now competing for RCC
🏐 2 Southern Oregon University Beach Volleyball athletes
🏐 1 NPJ alum

That’s more than just a group of volleyball people. That’s a community.

At RISE, we believe developing athletes means giving them access to a community that supports them beyond the club gym.

A community of coaches, collegiate athletes, alumni, mentors and leaders who can provide support, guidance, opportunity and leadership as our athletes continue to grow.

Because the goal isn’t just to create better volleyball players.

It’s to build a community that helps our athletes RISE. 🧡🏐

This is RISE Volleyball.
The Rogue Valley’s premier youth volleyball community.
