Swedish heavy metal legends HammerFall roll into Chapel of Bones for a night of chest-beating anthems, big choruses, and full-on singalong power. Formed in Gothenburg, Sweden in the early 90s, HammerFall helped keep classic heavy metal alive for an entire generation and are still out here swinging harder than ever. They’re joined by Italian folk/power metal veterans Elvenking, bringing soaring melodies, violin-soaked riffs, and pagan energy straight from Sacile, Italy. And opening the night is Raleigh’s own Mega Colossus, delivering high-flying, melodic, old-school shred to get the room fired up from the jump. If you like massive hooks, harmonized guitars, and yelling your lungs out with a room full of metalheads, this is your night. All Ages

Mega Colossus - Riptime Riptime hits you full force with the opener “Razor City” which was also the moment I knew I’d love the album. Megacolossus excel at their particular and peculiar brand of weighty melodic riffing and dual guitar harmonies that feel at once familiar and utterly unique. Clearly the band’s musical Geneology traces back to Slough Feg and Iron Maiden but they do so much to differentiate from their predecessors that it’s a wholly separate experience from either ultra classic. Mega Colossus lean heavily into pounding anthemic choruses while still keeping a level of complexity to their songwriting that continually leaves me saying “how did they write this?” It’s not uncommon for a track to deftly weave a plodding galloping riff at the tail end of a lightning fast harmonic laden passage so full of energy and excellent musicianship that you mistake it for the start of a guitar solo. Riptime is a strange name for an album, it seems like a play on “riptide” and “time” which evokes the idea of a turbulent time steam tossing you from one era to the next. That’s my explanation for why the album jumps between sci-fi alien invasions, renaissance traveling salesmen, and a song dedicated to Jenny Zero! That’s another thing I greatly appreciate about Mega Colossus, the vast majority of their songs seem to be about specific movies/books/shows/games while still putting effort into their lyricism! (A step many seem to eschew). Above all things, Riptime is fun, Mega Colossus call themselves “adventure metal” and while I’m often not one for pseudo genres/microgenres, these fellows clearly pronounce it with the same wink and nod that most of their music has, so I feel like it’s a fitting title (although I’m still going to call themselves power/heavy if you ask me what they are). I can’t recommend the band enough, every release is like a breath of fresh air and is doing things nobody else does. Rock and fuckin roll all night!
