🐱Sizing You Up: The Wampus Cat has six legs and serious side-eye. Living in Appalachia, its unearthly yowl accompanied by eerie screams and whistles can be heard through the trees on shadowy nights.

🐴 Today’s horror is the Nucklavee ('devil of the sea') is a skinless, ripped horse ghoul from Orkney with a humanoid head; he will clamber ashore to spread disease and ruin harvests. With 'glistening muscles and veins that shudder(ed) with black blood', the Nucklavee hates fresh water, so if you cross a stream you…might be safe.💀

🦉 This is the Penchapenchi from Bengal - a vampiric owl spirit who will swoop down from the tops of the forest to drink your blood. Some say they appear in pairs and are the spirits of human lovers who died tragically - if you hear their unearthly cry you should prepare for the worst! Drawn in pen and ink, pencil and gouache, I added the separate drawing of the skull to the mouth added after scanning. 💀

The Fairy Spotter’s Guide is written by @eliza_dearnley and illustrated by me.

It is @bannedbooksweekuk - where we celebrate the freedom to read!

Earlier this year @indexcensorship alerted us to a Greater Manchester secondary school censoring scores of books and taking disciplinary action against the librarian who stocked them.

My book, The Book of Non-Binary Joy - published by @jkpbooks - was on that list. They described the list as books with inappropriate content, which is a huge mistake, all the books on the list celebrate freedom and acceptance.

Banned Books Week UK is an annual celebration of the right to read freely in the UK and beyond. At a time where books are being increasingly challenged, taken off shelves or targeted due to the ideas they hold, Banned Books Week Uk brings literature lovers together to celebrate the freedom to read.

How to get involved:
Buy and Read Banned Books
Request banned books at your library
Share them at book clubs

⚖️🩸The secret is finally out! I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that TRUTHTELLER, along with another standalone novel, will be published by @waywardtxf in the UK. I couldn’t be more excited to share this news!

I wrote TRUTHTELLER to celebrate everything I have always loved about the genre — politics, high stakes, sweeping love stories, an explosion or two — but also to explore questions that have been bothering me since I first started practising law, namely: what, exactly, is justice, and where does it live? In the structures we build to govern ourselves, or somewhere far less orderly, like the human heart?

I want to give a heartfelt thank you to my agent, @megancarrollagent, who saw the heart of Truthteller before even I did, and to @laramccartney97, a fierce champion of my words and the editor of my dreams.
Thank you both for taking me on this insane publishing journey as I take my very first steps as a baby author.

I also want to thank my friends and family, as well as the incredible community of readers and authors here on Instagram, for your unending support.

The incredibly intricate frame you see here was created by the amazingly talented @lettersbylila_

I can’t wait to share all the exciting news still to come! 🩸⚖️

My Silent Sister is out today! My very first novel (and the one of my heart), this story, originally published in 2021 as Patience, is a special one.
If you like emotional, uplifting novels which remind you about the joy of being human, this novel is for you. Purchase link in my bio.

Ol' Higue (old hag) was one of the first three beings I drew for 'The Fairy Spotter's Guide' by @eliza_dearnley

All of the the illustrations were done in black and grey inks, and part-way through the process we decided to tint them with colours that alluded to their properties (here, it's fire) or their habitat (by or under water, in the mountains and so on). If you scroll you'll see the original, close-up. I was asked by a child at the book launch last week "what happened to her finger?" and the answer is...I don't know. I'm not sure I want to, either...

More fairies will be posted!

A launch for The Fairy Spotter’s Guide by @eliza_dearnley - and yes we kept the flower crowns on all night, even at dinner afterwards! Made by one of Elizabeth’s friends, they totally took my somewhat businesslike ‘post-holiday’ outfit into the woods…which was perfect because for the first time in this picture I notice I currently have the cheeks of a small pre-hibernation mammal 🐹😁

Thank you to the very considerate and welcoming staff at @theedinburghbookshop

…and to @welbeckpublish for asking me to illustrate this book. I played it cool but I think I said yes before they’d even finished asking the question. 🧚‍♀️

New book project! 🎃 Finn won’t admit it, but he can see A GHOST in his new house. She’s angry, she’s silent, she scares him…but she really needs him and his friends’ help. Out in January 2027, ‘Polterghost’ is one of the best middle grade books I’ve ever read; laugh-out-loud funny, creepy, atmospheric, and terribly poignant at times. I loved it. It’s by @kerryhansenauthor and it’s published by @charlesbridgepublishing and this was an absolute gem of a project. Swipe to see some of the sketches and versions I made on the way to the final cover (which opens out into a poster, btw!) 👻🪦
