Please keep NMELC in your heart and thoughts on #GivingTuesday and throughout the 2021 Giving Season!
Every dollar donated helps us continue to provide free to low-cost legal services to clients who are fighting for environmental justice across New Mexico.

***We are excited to announce that all donations up to $5,000 will be matched by a generous donor! Please help NMELC take full advantage of this opportunity to double your dollars!****

For over 34 years, the New Mexico Environmental Law Center (NMELC) has been working alongside the most impacted communities to protect our environment; defend everyone's fundamental right to clean air, land, and water; and to fight to uphold environmental justice across the state.

From our work battling the toxic legacy of uranium mining, to holding government agencies and decision-makers accountable, to standing alongside clients in defending limited water resources and fighting for clean air on behalf of clients, NMELC is working tirelessly at providing free to very low-cost legal services to those who need it most—frontline and fenceline communities who bear the brunt of pollution and environmental degradation.

Your generosity helps us to fight for our clients! Our work continues strong because of your generosity and commitment to protecting Mother Earth and defending environmental justice. No amount is too small.

****Please help us take advantage of a generous $5,000.00 Matching Grant we have received!****

Note: feel free to donate online on our website at https://nmelc.org/donations/ or via our Facebook fundraiser below. Thank you.

"La Mujer Dorada" Oil painting
by Meg G. Freyermuth © 2019
"This painting depicts a mountain in Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument that was given a derogatory name, a term which has now been banned on public lands. I have been bringing attention to this mountain and its need for a new name for several years, and this piece is one I've made giving homage to the mountain, which never deserved to have such a disgraceful name."

Three years ago today, my ten-panel piece "Leap: It is unchanging yet trembles sweetly" went up in the rotunda of the Doña Ana County Government Center under a ten year loan. Seven years left for the loan, and I have no idea what I'll do with the pieces then. 🤔

This piece is dedicated to all those who've died in the Organ Mountains. The view is from the Sierra Vista Trail south of Soledad Canyon Rd.

Flashback to an amazing day making art with a friend. 2 years ago I was in Juarez, Mexico visiting family, and I had an opportunity to drive up to my old stomping grounds, Las Cruces, to create some infrared art images. Meg is a wonderful painter, and and she was more than happy to share this amazing spot in the Desert Peaks National Monument. It was very chilly, but we made wonderful images, and I'm grateful to her for both her inspiration in her hard work...

Had a long, beautiful day with my people, celebrating our national monument. A brunch, a hike, and ended the day with a matanza organized by the wonderful New Mexico Wildlife Federation (here's the Centennial High School Mariachi group performing for us as part of the festivities). This is why we asked for national monument designation: because it is important to our community, our culture, our heritage, our way of life, and our future, that this land remain in public hands! @usinterior Our Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument defines who we are as a people, and we will not allow it to be taken from us. ✊

Happy 3rd Birthday to our beautiful national monument.... and many more! 🎻
