THRILLED TO BE LAUNCHING MY BMW OPEN WORK PROJECT “63/22” AT FRIEZE LONDON THIS WEEK.

CURATED BY @attiliaff ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

When I was approached about this commission earlier this year I immediately knew what I wanted to do (rare). About seven years ago, I was doing a lot of research about car culture and the emergence of rock ‘n’ roll as a genre of American music closely tied to modes of black cultural production, and I came across a very interesting story. In 1963 Gibson Guitars approached auto designer Ray Dietrich to design an electric guitar, the Gibson Firebird.

I knew that the genre of rock n roll and the automotive industries circled and flirted with one another but rarely if ever directly overlapped in the way that they did in this moment in 1963. (Fun fact: Guitar makers were using car paint for the finishes of their guitars around this time as well).

The first rock ‘n’ roll song “Rocket 88” was written in 1951 by Ike Turner (yes that Ike Turner) and it’s about a car (the song title references a popular sports car model at the time). Around this same time, Berry Gordy was modeling his production techniques for Motown Records off of the assembly line framework within which he was working during his day job at the Lincoln-Mercury auto plant in Detroit.

Keeping in mind the huge influence that designers’ experiences and values have on the shapes and forms that technologies take, I wanted to re-create this overlap between car and guitar cultures but with a caveat: the profiles of the users of these technologies has changed drastically since 1963, so I presented the BMW i7 designers with the challenge of proposing new forms of the electric guitar for other kinds of bodies and players.

The designs that @h____v____f, @jo_karlette, @corinnaaae & @sebastiansimm created were just stunning.

@maloneguitars’ boundless skill and enthusiasm brought these designs to life.

Lighting design by @stuff.josephine.makes! 💛☀️

This week on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at 3pm we have mind blowing activations of these guitars by three really incredible musicians: @r4ggs, @alpha_maid, and @jovial3.
