Hi Folks -

We got to do something very special this week.

On September 1st, the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf, in my hometown of Mobile, Alabama, had a private viewing for my family and those friends and colleagues of Jimmy’s, who supported and helped create their new exhibit, Son of a Son of a Sailor.

LaLa and her family were there, my family too, along with Savannah and her family, cousins from both the Buffett and Peets sides, old bandmates, business partners, friends going back decades. It felt like four reunions happening in one room, family and band and business and just about everybody who’s been part of this story along the way.

It also happened to be three years to the day since we lost him.
But there wasn’t any heaviness in that room. Nobody was dwelling on losing him. We were celebrating him, his genuine spirit, his curiosity, that joy he carried into everything he did.

The exhibit exceeded everyone’s expectations! It is beautiful. Touching. Funny. Poignant. Emotional. Fun. Amazing. And somehow accomplishes the impossible task of relating his amazing story. But Jimmy would be most thrilled because the creators took the approach of telling the story of our family and it began with our grandfather, Captain James Delaney Buffett, Sr.

A Master of Sail and Steam, our grandfather, who we called FooFoo, sailed the world many times over, found love on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and started a family that would live, work and play along the Alabama brackish bays and salty beaches of the beautiful Gulf waters that eventually inspired my brother to write songs and find his own calling.

The grand opening is September 12th! I mean it when I say every Parrothead, every child of the Gulf, every fan who ever sang along needs to see this. Come to Mobile. Take your time. Walk through it slowly. Laugh. Sing, Cry. And remember that Jimmy’s legacy is all about the joy left us.

We are so proud.

All my Gumbo Love, LuLu

All Hail the Once & Future King of Mardi Gras 👑 “My façade of irreverence toward death, as well as my primal fear of it, comes from the fact that I am a child of the Mardi Gras. Though the celebration of Fat Tuesday is synonymous with New Orleans, it actually started in Mobile…

[B]y the time I was old enough to walk to the parade route, the foolishness had been going on for well over 100 years…permanently entrenched in the psyche of Gulf Coast children.

We were all genetically programmed to repeat the phrase, “Throw me something, mister...” I could slip eel-like into the underbelly of Mardi Gras, where we would grapple like street urchins for “throws” that older eyes could not see & larger hands could not catch…

For all the frolicking & carrying on, there was something spiritual about Mardi Gras. My 1st revelation came somewhere back in the early ‘50s. On Fat Tuesday the parades started at 10 in the morning & went until well into the night, when the last parade of the season was presented by…the Order of Myths…

Th[eir] 1st float was not greeted with shouts & screams…there were only 2 figures on the float... A skeleton with a maniacal grin painted across his face…taunting a masker in a court jester’s costume… When I saw the skeleton, I was frightened to death and let out a blood-curdling scream. He heard me, looked my way, & started to laugh…

“What is it?” I cried.

“It’s Folly chasing Death,” my mother replied.

“It’s only make-believe.” But I was still petrified.

Then it happened. Through my welling tears, I heard a crack that sounded like a gunshot.

While Death had been so preoccupied with scaring the living hell out of me, Folly had snuck up [&] given him a wallop on the butt that could be heard 2 blocks away. I started laughing hysterically. The crowd joined me, & soon we had Death on the run again. The parade continued, & the final hour of fun resumed…

I still vividly recall that first encounter with Death, & learning that Folly was the only way to deal with it. You know Death will get you in the end, but if you are smart & have a sense of humor, you can thumb your nose at it for a while.” (APLA50)
