Your snack can do more than just hold you over until your next meal.

One simple way I build a more satisfying snack is to think:

PROTEIN + FIBRE + HEALTHY FATS

Here are a few easy combinations to try:

Pistachios + fruit — I’ve tried @wonderfulpistachios , and they’re a convenient option to keep around.

Almonds + a protein-rich yogurt — some yogurt options I’ve personally tried and enjoyed include @chobani , @siggisdairy , @yasso , @proteinpints , and @galivant . Check the nutrition label because protein content can vary considerably between products.

And remember: you don’t need to eat several handfuls of nuts just to get more protein. Start with a reasonable portion and pair it with another protein-rich food.

This post was inspired by a Martha Stewart article written by Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner, featuring insights from nutrition experts including Kelly Burgess, MBA, RD, LDN.

My takeaway?
Don’t just snack. Build your snack.

These are some products I’ve personally used and liked not sponsored, just sharing options I’ve tried.

Which combination are you trying first?

Lucky me, I got to have drinks and dessert from @moonrabbitdc twice in one week! In DC at their award winning restaurant, and then a few days later here in NY at @narkaranyc for a special @eatthairice dinner.

Thailand is one of world's leading rice exporters, with a wide variety from jasmine to sticky rice to the purple hued nutty riceberry. @eatthairice hosted a delicious dinner featuring different rice dishes by @iamchefve of @narkaranyc, paired with @thi.ng26's award winning cocktails (@michelinguide Best Cocktails DC) that also featured Thai rice! This wonderful meal was closed out with an excellent dessert from Chef @susanbae (@beardfoundation AND @theworlds50best North America Best Pastry Chef) featuring, you guessed it, Thai rice! 🍚

My favorite savory course of the evening was this riceberry Khao Yum. I've never had this Thai mixed rice dish — it reminded me of a nasi goreng or bibimbap, but with Thai aromatics and herbs. A pan seared crispy skin branzino gets chopped up and mixed with riceberry and a rainbow of veggies with nam budu fermented fish sauce. A bit funky and super umami, I really loved this combination of flavors. The little dried fish on top reminded me of miniature versions of my favorite Korean snack of dried tile fish #쥐포.

This Panang curry with steak was served with a smoked coconut Thai Hom Mali rice.

The crew!

Kate @katetheprqueen, Tommy, @iamchefve, @susanbae, @thi.ng26!

Video montage of the first half of our meal.

Passed bites!

Thai pancake with lemongrass shrimp
Sago peanut dumpling
Strawberry, Thai dressing, coconut, mint, dried shrimp

@thi.ng26 making my cocktail at @moonrabbitdc in DC and at @narkaranyc in NY 🍸

Second half of meal!

These little dried fish tasted very similar to Korean dried tile fish. Anyone know the Thai name?

Another shot of the steak curry.

Black rice Manhattan.

Crispy grilled sticky rice cake, grilled chicken ballontine, rich Gaeng Om reduction.

Toasted rice sour and riceberry highball

A different angle of the 🥩

Sweet corn mousse, summer peaches, Thai hom mali rice sorbet, sesame, rau ram and mizuna.

Pretty shaved peaches 🍑

Another excellent @eatthairice dinner!

Khao Yum - the classic Southern Thai rice salad - gets a fabulous upgrade at @narkaranyc to celebrate the joys of Thai rice. Chef Verasak Sangsiri lays out a rich spread of herbs & veggies & skinny noodles & lots of herbs & spices. He adds a crispy slice of pan-seared branzino, making this a full seafood dish. He adds both nam budu (the funky, concentrated fish sauce) and hamachi dip (for raw-fish umami). So, the plate is full of fermented and aromatic flavors. What could possibly stand up to all this? Riceberry - a Thai variety of whole-grain purple rice, with a deep color & nutty flavor. The bran-filled rice also has the texture to stand up. It's a superb dish.

The rest of the meal - including cocktails by @thi.ng26 of @moonrabbitdc - is similarly thoughtful about showing the range of Thai rice. It was all yummy. Here's the flow:
- Apps! Sakoo Sai Tua (Sago peanut dumpling); a strawberry topped with coconut flakes, mint, dried shrimp; Kanom Krok Nha Goong (pancake topped with lemongrass shrimp)
- The fish
- Gaeng om, a reduced & concentrated curry with roots in northeast Thailand, made with mushrooms, fermented fish & galangal; served with a Sticky rice cake & veggies, Thai perilla seeds & grilled chicken.
- Smoked coconut Thai hom Mali (jasmine) rice, with a Penang curry & beef, inspired by Bali
- Brilliant Dessert by @susanbae of @moonrabbitdc, with Jasmine Thai rice sorbet, 2 kinds of pickled peaches, Perilla oil & lime juice, dehydrated Rau ram (citrusy & peppery)

It's a wonderful meal, featuring Thai hospitality and Thai rice. Obviously I was already a fan of both - but Narkara (with some help from Moon Rabbit) reinforces it nicely. Great event at a great spot!
