The Dominican Winter League is full of characters. One of my favorites from directing “The Hottest Winter” was former Cubs first baseman - and college friend of mine - @frank_schwindel ⚾️

Frank has a unique connection to the DR. His wife is Dominican, he speaks (some) Spanish, and he fit in with his teammates as if he were born on the island.

His story was one of redemption. Just one season after crushing it with the Chicago Cubs, a back injury sent Frank back to the Dominican Winter League, where he looked to prove to MLB scouts that he still had some juice left in his bat.

Having all-access with Frank led to some hilarious moments with his father-in-law (also named Frank) and his teammates in the Águilas clubhouse.

Directing, producing, shooting and editing Frank’s story was a full-circle moment - from college friend to documentary subject - and one of the most memorable projects of my filmmaking career.

Special shoutout to my producer partners @beemorgs and @cpena23 🎬

Not gonna lie, I was all aboard the Melky train back in the day. #28 was my guy! So these 3 signed cards had to end up framed together. I may not be the biggest card collector, but every once in a while a player comes along that makes you break your own rules.

Random fun Melky facts: He was originally signed by the Yankees at just 17yrs old, won a World Series ring in 2009 & somehow managed to be an All Star MVP in 2012 after hitting a home run in the game. One of the few guys who could make a routine single look like he was rounding the bases with a refrigerator on his back, but somehow he’d still end up standing on second.

Baseball cards come & go, but favorites never really leave. Every collection needs a few pieces that make you remember why you started collecting in the first place.

OTD in 2009, Chaos erupted at CitiField

With the bases loaded in the top of the 9th inning, Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez intentionally walked New York @Yankees Captain @DerekJeter, daring @MarianoRivera to beat him.

On a full-count 3-2 pitch, the greatest closer of all time showed the ultimate patience.

Ball four.

The Sandman drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing home @melkycabrera for the first—and only—RBI of Mariano Rivera’s legendary @MLB career.

A moment no one saw coming.

Congratulations, 4️⃣🐐2️⃣

The Bombers defeated The Mets, 4-2.

Every collection has a few pieces that mean more than the autograph itself.

These signed photos of Robinson Canó and Melky Cabrera take me right back to those Yankees teams of the mid-2000s. Two best friends in pinstripes, coming up through the system together and helping bring a new energy to the Bronx.

Melky was always my guy. While everyone else was focused on the superstars, I found myself rooting for #53 every night. That’s what makes collecting fun, the pieces that tell your story, not everyone else’s. #pinstripes #yankeefavorites @melkycabrera @robinsoncano

The 2009 Yankees lineup was an absolute nightmare for opposing pitchers. 😳

Everywhere you looked, there was an All-Star, MVP candidate, or future Hall of Famer.

⚾ Derek Jeter hit .334 and finished 3rd in MVP voting
⚾ Mark Teixeira launched 39 HR and drove in 122 RBI
⚾ Alex Rodriguez still put up 30 HR and 100 RBI despite missing time
⚾ Robinson Canó hit .320 with 25 HR
⚾ Hideki Matsui delivered one of the greatest World Series performances ever

And that’s before mentioning Johnny Damon, Jorge Posada, Nick Swisher, and Melky Cabrera.

🏆 103 Wins
🏆 AL East Champions
🏆 World Series Champions

There may have been lineups with more star power, but very few were this deep from top to bottom.

Where do you rank the 2009 Yankees lineup among the greatest lineups in MLB history? 👇

On this day in 2009, the infamous “he dropped the ball” game.

Luis Castillo drops Alex Rodriguez’s popup allowing the Yankees to walk it off in the Bronx.

OTD in 2009, The New @Yankees DEFEATED the @Mets 9-8 in one of the most improbable WALK-OFF victories in @MLB history.

Down by one run in the bottom of the ninth, @AROD popped up a ball off Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez into shallow right field for what appeared to be the final out of the game.

However, Mets second baseman Luis Castillo allowed the ball to bounce in and out of his glove, opening the door for @DerekJeter and Mark Teixeira to score for the win at @YankeeStadium

It was the Bombers 7️⃣th WALK-OFF victory of the season.
