What is a mentor?

When I was in 5th grade, I went to a Cincinnati Bearcats men’s basketball game and watched a new player throw down a huge dunk. My brother told me he had joined the team late because he needed to get his test scores up first. As a kid who struggled in school, that stuck with me. He instantly became my hero.

So I went home and wrote him a letter telling him he was my favorite player. A week later, I met Melvin Levett. And somehow, that moment turned into something much bigger. Melvin, 6’3’’ college basketball player from inner-city Cleveland, became friends with a little blonde 5th grader from Cincinnati.

He showed up in ways he didn’t have to. He came to my school and sat with me at lunch when I was being teased because of my dyslexia. He came to our house and played basketball with my brothers. More importantly, he built confidence in me when I didn’t have much of my own.

He had nothing to gain. No obligation. He just believed in me.

Melvin taught me to be confident, to keep going, to fight for what I believe in, and to ignore the noise from people who don’t matter. There’s no version of my story without him in it.

Over the years, we’ve traded roles as mentor and mentee. One of my favorite moments was when he came to watch me swim in college and told me I was a better athlete than him. (Still debatable, but I’ll take it.)

Melvin is one of a kind. A humble college athlete who chose to invest in a young girl simply because he could.

Today, as he celebrates his 50th birthday, I’m reminded how much one person can change the trajectory of someone else’s life.

Take a moment to thank someone who showed up for you when they didn’t have to. Who believed in you when you didn’t believe in yourself.
Those are the real difference-makers. The unsung heroes.

The world needs more Melvin Levetts.

Legendary.

On today’s date in 1998, the Bearcats went all the way to Alaska to face top-ranked Duke. With seconds remaining, Kenyon Martin caught a full-court heave and dished to Melvin Levett for a game-winning slam.
