Why am I so happy to have finished these earrings?

As many of you know, a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. Everything in my little world stopped. Chemo took me out, radiation took me out more. The mental load of it all, even more. If you've seen me out, it was because I had enough strength that day to go out. Very few people have seen how I was behind closed doors. I "looked" fine, but I was not, and still am not.

Before starting treatment, I had started a batch of earring. I thought I'd at the very least, be okay to sit at a table and make my earrings and run my shop. I was wrong. I tried many times and just couldn't do it. I even contemplated closing my shop permanently.

Now, on a new treatment, having more energy... I've been working on getting stronger. I've been trying to get back to things that were normal before I started this journey. I slowly went back to work. Shout out to my absolutely wonderful employers @johannahowardhome and @mellowworksart. I can't say enough about them both. I'm blessed to be working with them.

One day I decided to pull out the clay pieces I cut an entire year ago. Not thinking I'd touch them at all, I jumped all in and finished them in just a few days. I never thought I would. I had lost my desire to. Now I feel my creative self coming back and that means a whole lot, being all that we've been through. I'm excited to create again. This is my story, and why finishing these earrings is such a big deal. ❤️

I grew up in a small town in Kentucky. My mom was the high school sex ed teacher and my dad was little league president and junior high principal. It seemed like they knew everyone- still does. Sometimes that was annoying- everyone knows your business in that southern way. But it also made me feel proud and safe in our community. If there was ever anything that came up that was beyond my parents’ ability, they knew someone, and that person was always willing to help. We had a strong community and everyone leaned on each other. This gave me a foundational sense of trust and confidence in human networks- such an optimistic gift.

When we moved to Maplewood from Brooklyn in 2014, we didn’t know anyone, but I knew there were so many interesting people here, and I wanted to connect with them. O!C became my community builder. All of a sudden I was surrounded by families. I was working with their kids, but also getting to know their individual stories, expertise, and talents. That’s how adult workshops were born!

Amanda de Beaufort aka @dyekween collaborated on her first workshop at O!C in 2018 after we met at a friends’ house. Josi from @wildlyfloral.co did her first ever workshop with us after our coffee date. I met Jake Guttormsson at a local makers fair and his work was so playful it made perfect sense to invite him in to share.

Our workshops are designed to tap into the wealth of our local communities. They bring you to a space to meet and learn from the makers, but also from each other. They lean on us for an opportunity to share their work. We lean on them for their vision and expertise. You lean in to flex your creativity and get a fun night out!

The world is pretty hard to swallow right now, but our local community always makes me hopeful. Let’s lean on each other, y’all.
