I wrote these 13 rules during one of the darkest periods of my life.
It wasn’t just one thing. For years I’ve been fighting Lyme disease. Long-term illness wears you down quietly, make you susceptible to all kind of weird diseases. Add a few heartbreaks on top, and it can fuck with your head in ways you don’t expect.
There were days when I felt completely lost. Days when I couldn’t imagine any future at all.
I didn’t have some magical breakthrough.
I keep falling.
And I keep getting back up.
Getting outside.
Moving my body.
Being around people.
Doing things that scared me.
Talking about what I was feeling.
Taking one day at a time.
And slowly, things started changing.
Finding these notes again reminded me:
Everything is temporary.
The pain is temporary.
The loneliness is temporary.
The version of yourself that feels completely lost is temporary too.
The rules:
1. Accept everything the way it is.
2. Do not seek pleasure for its own sake.
3. Do not depend on partial feelings.
4. All you have is NOW.
5. Nothing from the outside world will bring long-term peace. Only within.
6. All is temporary.
7. Act out of LOVE, not fear.
8. Be grateful for everything.
9. Communicate feelings in time.
10. Help those who need it.
11. Provide for yourself as you provide for others.
12. Remember who you are.
13. Stay on path.
Smile, mfckr.
I’m sharing this because I know I’m not the only one who has been there.
Brothers, we were raised to hold it in. To be strong, stay quiet, handle it alone. That almost broke me. Talking is what saved me.
If you’re struggling with depression, illness, heartbreak, or thoughts that life isn’t worth continuing:
Please don’t make a permanent decision in the middle of a temporary storm.
Tell someone.
Call someone.
Ask for help.
Stay with people.
Take the next hour, not the rest of your life.
You don’t need to know how everything is going to work out.
You just need to stay on the path long enough to find out.

She survived the war.

And then, in 1946, the Royal Navy deliberately sent her to the bottom off Malta. Not because she was lost, but because she was useful there - her last yet very important mission.

HMS Stubborn became a real underwater target for sonar training, giving crews something very real to search for beneath the surface.

There’s something slightly ironic about it.
A submarine that survived the enemy, only to be sunk by her own navy so others could learn how to find submarines.

And more than 80 years later, she’s still down there.

One of my favorite swimthroughs that keeps calling me back and bringing good memories from when Melly and I first found it.
