I’ve owned my Sony A7RV for over a year now. With new gear comes new lessons. Here’s what I’ve learned 👇🏽

1️⃣ Camera vs Photographer:
I had an a6400 for a few years, learning to master what it was capable of, yet I knew it was holding me back. I wanted to go all out and going to a full frame camera was a game changer especially the MP jump from 24 to 61 it’s extremely noticeable and I get every detail I’m hoping for. However I needed to relearn how to shoot on a non cropped sensor. The untapped potential was there but it became more about mastering my craft once again.

2️⃣ Shooting from the shadow side
I used to despise shooting cars in sunny lighting. I never understood how to balance exposure when one side of the car is flooding with hard sunlight while the other becomes too dark. Then I realized shooting cars from the opposite side of the sun would let me bring out the details while the car gets a silhouette on the other side. The glow and lens flare is always worth it. It doesn’t always work out perfectly, but that’s where the contrast in lighting becomes an art rather than a nuisance. Learn where the light lands best.

3️⃣ Masking
I never fully understood the concept of masking in photos whether it was for the subject or background, however this year I took the time to learn how to properly do it and now each photo pops with highlights shadows and emphasis on the subject. It takes a lot of extra time, but once you get a flow going it passes by so much easier. Not to mention the wheels that need their details shown properly, they make half of the car.

4️⃣ Getting creative with angles
I decided at some point to add emphasis on rotating the camera so shots were not straight. Best decision I’ve made so far. Flat straight images often get repetitive. Follow the lines of the composition and flow of the subject. Shoot one shot straight and then get the same shot but rotate the camera to see which looks best for that shot.

5️⃣ Birds eye view
I used to love putting my camera on the ground for every shot, I thought it looked best. Then I tried shooting higher angles, and then those that’d leave me in a weird position on my toes. The shots are worth it always.

@mels.miata crazy to think you were lost in my hidden message request asking for wheels specs and just a year or two later come across my feed with jaw dropping 18” fitment .
Hope we can get some rollers next time 🤙🏻
