Update: What started as what I thought was a normal SIBO flare that just wouldn’t let up turned into something far more serious, and I’m so grateful I listened to my body and sought emergency medical attention when I did. I ended up needing emergency surgery after doctors found two internal hernias. An internal hernia happens when part of the intestine slips through an opening inside the abdomen, which can cause a blockage or cut off blood flow. Mine happened through something called a Petersen’s defect, a space that can sometimes form after abdominal surgery and allow the bowel to become trapped or twist. In my case, it caused dangerous twisting near my mesenteric artery and pinching/obstruction near my portal vein. It sucked hearing that it would be a big open incision versus laparoscopic ones but I understood why in case any bowel became necrotic and needed to be resected. THANK GOD NONE was necrotic nor needed resected. But yes my poor belt button will need Dr. Towers’ amazing reconstruction at a later date. Must allow my body to fully heal first. It was terrifying, painful, and one of the most vulnerable experiences of my life, but I’m incredibly grateful for the doctor who acted so quickly and for everyone supporting me through this recovery. I’m still healing, still processing, and taking it one day at a time. Just another scar that tells a story. This surgical recovery has been rough especially pain wise😭what people don’t talk about is the difference in pain even after skin removal. How the brain and that area connect differently. The pain is tender, constant ,excruciating. So it has been a process to find what works/gives relief even just temporarily. Remember to listen to your body. Know you don’t have to navigate this alone.
