This beauty of a book, “The Things That Saved Me: Breathing Light Into Our Stories!” by @melynnerust is 1 month old today! Yay!! 🥳

And, friends, it’s a good one!

Melynne has a wonderful knack for including just the right details, piquing her reader’s curiosity and inviting them to come alongside her as she shares the stories of her younger selves. Her honesty, courage, and integrity all shine through beautifully.

I came away with a heart full of amazement at all that she has been through, wonder for all that she’s learned along the way, and gratitude for her generosity in sharing her stories, painfully challenging parts and all.

This gem of a book is a true testament to the wisdom that can be found waiting for us when we take the time to tenderly look back for the gifts in each season of our lives.

Warmest congratulations, dear Melynne! May your book find its way into the hands and hearts of those it’s meant to touch, like mine. 💞

On February 12, 2021, I sent my first book, “Fine Lines: Walking the Labyrinth of Grief and Loss” out into the world.

A dream come true, I had to keep reminding myself it was real.

It was, and today is “Fine Lines” second birthday!

To celebrate, I’m taking a page from the Hobbits in J. R. R. Tolkien’s tale “The Lord of the Rings”, whose practice was to give presents to others on their own birthdays. For the rest of the month, “Fine Lines” will be available at a 33% discount on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and all IngramSpark Book Group retailers worldwide.

To my amazing editorial team @christiannesquires, @ines_bookformatter, @creativeblueprintdesign, @kathrynconeway, @proof_corrections_by_callie, and @btleditorial, thank you for your help and expertise in bringing “Fine Lines” into the world. You were joy and blessing to work with, and I could not have done it without you.

To my launch team—particularly the Bookwifery Collective—and my readers, reviewers, and followers, my deepest gratitude for your companionship, encouragement, and support.

Happy 2nd Birthday, Fine Lines!

I was asked this week by a wise soul where I am finding and feeling a sense of sanctuary. It’s with these tithonia rotundifolia also called Mexican sunflowers or tree magnolias. The stems are soft like velvet and even the petals feel soft.

While I continue my tree visits in the forest behind our house, thorny vines, and biting oak mites and mosquitos make this more of a challenge and less of a peaceful retreat.

These new-to-me blooms in my front garden are a constant source of wonder and connection, a place of pause and reverence. It is the flowers themselves but also ALL the pollinators they attract.

Lately I’m noticing the tattered and threadbare condition of some of these winged visitors, and yet, along with that is their vitality. They fly up toward the trees, then return to flowers again, busily seeking nectar each time. They don’t seem bothered by damaged or missing wings, they carry on being butterflies, vital and full of life, catching the light with the patterns and colors of wings, in some places a bit more translucent due to the wear and tear.
I’m grateful for reflection times this past week with @delenabeth_knight and with my Bookwifery circle.

Friends I am absolutely heart-broken over what is happening in places like Afghanistan, Haiti, and Myanmar 💔. Over the next several days I will be posting prayers as one way we can respond together to these and other painful places in our worlds.

These will be simple prayers that run deep. Prayers that stay in our hearts and on our lips to be uttered all the day long. Add to them as Spirit leads you, and invite others to join.

Our first prayer is this: God, Guide & Provide.

Guide people to safety.
Guide worldwide leadership personnel to just action.
Guide helpers and supplies to those in need.
And confuse those that come to harm, guiding them AWAY from their intended targets.

Provide safety.
Provide refuge.
Provide open roads and means to escape.
Provide a way where there is no way.
Provide courage.
Provide faith.
Provide help in time of need.
Provide strength.
Provide resources.
Provide wisdom.
Provide your presence so no one, no one faces these things alone.

God Almighty, guide & provide.

I thought about having some kind of ceremony for my uterus. But then I realized I needed to be apart from people in advance of my surgery and then it was a rainy weekend, so there wasn’t an option of meeting outside.

But then, on Friday, when I was asked to share about my experience of awakening to my body with my Light House community, my period started.

So, before I shared about how running has connected me with my body and my child-self in some pretty powerful ways, I spent a moment with these women acknowledging my pain.

I fought through my tears — the tears that make my chin shake and my face get all splotchy. The tears that I’ve been embarrassed of for most of my life.

I fought through my cramps — the cramps that take my breath away and force me to rest when I don’t want to. The cramps that have been painful since I was 12 years old.

I fought through tripping over my own words and thinking I said something funny but couldn’t hear any laughter (thanks, Zoom) and snot dripping out of my nose.

I fought through it all and came out healed. I came out of it loving myself deeply. And then texts started coming in full of love and support and acknowledging my bravery.

I’m brave? Apparently so.

As it turns out, I did have a ceremony for my uterus. It wasn’t how I imagined it would look, but it was just right. Being surrounded by women I’ve never met in person but whom I love dearly… weird, different… and so ME.

Birds of feather flock together and each Friday I cozy into a nest with a beautiful group of contemplative writers organized in the Lighthouse Community thanks to @christiannesquires . What a joy to tend to our “creative eggs” together and watch them grow. This week we watched one hatch and fly off into the world! It’s so beautiful. Meet author @kathy_swaar who has written so much more than a book outlining the twists and turns on grief. There’s a hint of a romance novelist in the making here as she unfolds her love story and there are tender noticing of the silly things that happen along the way of this journey. Congrats @kathy_swaar . I know many will be blessed in the reading your first “hatchling”. Cake and champagne for you today ! A special shout-out to another bird in our nest @kathrynconeway who designed this beautiful cover.

Every week I meet with this group of women to talk about our past week, our hopes for the coming week. This is my weekly examen group part of The Light House founded by @christiannesquires.

I showed up today with my tears. This morning I heard about a pregnancy and for some reason this one really hit me hard. As one friend put it, grief isn’t always logical — it comes out of nowhere.

Another friend noted that on her zoom screen I was in the center, like I was being held and surrounded by them. Another friend saw the same thing, took a picture and sent it to me — just so I could see the image myself.

Part of caring for myself (or living in the midst of the grief) means paying attention to what I need. When I got the news this morning I reached out to a friend, then I changed my clothes and got on the treadmill. At one point I was running, crying and wondering if this was a safe endeavor. However, I knew that moving my body would help me process my emotions.

I was tempted not to go to this meeting because I had another 2 hour meeting afterward, but I’m so glad I showed up. Part of caring for myself is letting my pain be seen and witnessed, so that I can be loved and cared for by those who love and care for me.

It’s not easy but being seen in those hard moments helps me find more love for myself.

Do you have a trusted friend or friends that you can be seen by? Is it hard for you to share those hard moments?

Cascade Ministries January newsletter comes out today❣️💃🕺🏻🎉 🌟

In the newsletter, I share how I found a trusted companion in Zechariah and how he helped me notice the invitation to begin praying prayers long abandoned and acknowledge those abandoned prayers God has answered.

Gentle and wise Melynne Rust returns and ponders resilience, rescue, and doing hard things using a story about a drowning armadillo and her divorce.

The Light House is not only Cascade Ministries latest ministry partner, I am also an active member of theLight House. The Light House is a community for contemplative women who bring light into the world every day. I invite you to consider joining the Light House as the membership are now open for a couple more days.

As you enter a new year filled with possibility and potential, do you find yourself yearning for a deeper relationship with the Holy? Do you feel disconnected and distracted from your life, self, others, or God? Perhaps there is a space emerging to be still and reflect on your inner journey. A spiritual Director is one who companions you to recognize and to follow the inspirations of grace in your life. I welcome and invite you to a conversation, where we can decide if spiritual direction may be a helpful practice for you at this time of your journey.

If you have not become part the growing community at Cascade Ministries we would love to have you join us. You are invited. You are welcomed. Link is in the bio.

Cascade Ministries December newsletter is now out ❣️💃🕺🏻🎉

In it I explore mercy and how it differs from grace.

Anne Brock returns and shares the many parallels between the Advent Season and walking 135 miles of the Camino de Santiago in Spain. She weaves together her experience, reflections, along with the story of the first Advent.

I review Melynne Rust’s timely book “Common Spaces Between Us.” It is a guy to ethical conversations and models a path of connection and hope by nurturing what is true and good and human between us. I highly recommend this book.

The Light House is not only Cascade Ministries latest ministry partner, I am also an active member of theLight House. The Light House is a community for contemplative women who bring light into the world every day. I invite you to consider joining the Light House when the membership doors open at the end of December.

I am now offering one on one Enneagram sessions where I gently and simply walk you through the Enneagram, opening a door to each type, and inviting you to find and explore what is familiar to you. No tests. No quizzes. It is an invitational encounter of exploration and self discovery, opening a door to a greater capacity for compassion of self and others. I would love to chat with you about all things Enneagram and how it relates to you.
