Thirty-two years ago, we met in another chapter of beauty…me, a former model before the lens, and her already shaping what light could do to a face.

Life moved, as it does…through adventures, separate paths, and the quiet certainty of friendship.

She carried her artistry across the world through fashion weeks and distant cities, while I came to shape beauty through interiors, atmosphere, and the language of space.

Decades later, for the first time professionally, I had the pleasure of helping bring form to her salon and the chapter she was opening.

Now my youngest daughter stands there too, learning beside her.

Some connections do not need explanation; they simply deepen, and become part of how life continues to unfold.

5 keys to learning success as a hairstylist backstage or behind the chair:

🌟 Physical tools and Knowledge Tools

✂️ unlearn bad habits
✂️ choosing the correct tools
✂️ operate the tool correctly
✂️ applying the tool where needed
✂️ use tool at the correct time needed

#feed the brain
Metaphorically we have a tool box full of tools we have learned and use daily. There is never any reason to throw the entire tool box at every opportunity or problem.

🥰 Sometimes you just need a tail comb. You get me?

🥰 And sometimes we do that because we dont have the tools we need.

👉 🌟 Learn what you need. Apply where and when you need it. Stop doing what does not work. Success.

Broken Brush = Broken Hair 💔 If you are seeing hair Breakage but doing all the right things. Take a look at replacing your brushes + hot tools.

We dont always think about our tools causing hair breakage but they are just as important as our products.

Brush bristles dont last forever but a durable and well made brush will last longer and worth the investment to keep your hair looking great and not breaking from the start.

A few durability tips 🔽

✂️ keep blowdryer nozzle from resting on brush during blowdrying and off brush bristles as much as possible.

✂️ clean the brush each use! Built up hair wrapped around brush will snag hair during blowdry and cause breakage.

✂️ This build up on brush also prevents full use of brush benefits and makes for longer blowdry times.

➡️ blowdry 1 x week ⏯️ replace 2 years

➡️ blowdry 2 - 3 x week ⏯️ replace 12 - 18 months

➡️ blowdry 3+ X week ⏯️ replace 6 - 12 months

➡️ sharing brush w/household ⏯️ get own brush 😮 🤣

💯 each use of brush per person is a seperate use....even if owner of brush only blowdries 1 x a month etc.

💖 cuts blowdry time down when tools function properly 💖

Its never been about who is best. How is that even measured? Success in any situation whether behind the chair or behind the runway backstage is about choosing the right methods, techniques and willingness to adapt those to what needs to be done.

If you want to be backstage you dont need to be the best. You need to be willing to take your skills and adapt them in a way that successfully work for the end result. Be willing to help your team members and most importantly allow them to help you. Its not about you or me or anyone person.

🤯 Runway is a collection of people coming together as a unit to making it happen. This part may have to be learned but being known as the best (whatever that means) is not relevant.

Backstage hair is challenging, frustrating, chaotic and the most rewarding role I've ever had in my career. I dont know if I'm the best or worst but what I know is that I have experienced it and I love it. This part is true.
