This really applies to everything, but in the context of relationships, behaviors of hidden communication with others is a breach of trust.

There are a lot of reasons why people may do this. They may be carrying an affair of a physical or emotional nature, they may mean no harm by it but don’t mention it (omission) knowing it may be bothersome to their partner, the communication may be platonic but you want to avoid a potentially emotional conversation so you down play it or lie, etc.

None of these reasons make it respectable to your partner to not be truthful and transparent. It doesn’t really matter what the communication is, it’s a breach of trust. Some may deal with a partner hiding conversations with friends because of financial issues a partner doesn’t know about. Some may deal with a partner only communicating with a certain person on social media like snapchat. Some may delete messages frequently and offer to browse through their phone.

These are all micro-cheating behaviors. You have to respect your partner enough to have hard conversations with them even if it makes you both uneasy. Healthy couples have uncomfortable conversations instead of avoiding them, because the avoidance of these feeling-driven conversations is where relationships often struggle. There is no way to build emotional intimacy and security if you avoid the emotion-heavy conversations needed for the relationship to grow into a partnership.

So instead of hiding behaviors, begin to learn about your own feelings and communicate them to your partner before you find yourself feeling the need to cover your tracks. A big barrier of this for many is shame, and without addressing the root causes, hiding, omitting and lying will always continue.

🌎 We all experience the world in different ways, but the impact of state violence on the collective culture and ultimately each individual is traumatic. This is layered of course. Layered with each individuals own personal histories and experiences at the hands of large systems.

🌎 It’s our responsibility to hold space for each emotion that comes up while empowering individuals that they are more than the structures in which they are in right now. We have to help individuals learn the langauge and develop the tools that make sense for them.

❄️ December - January is an especially hard time for many people dealing with holidays, family dynamics, changes in their life, loss, absence of loved ones and on top of that, seasonal depression. The list can go on.

❄️ Many people often also see an uptick in their struggle with managing mental health issues. It’s no coincidence that this time of year can be triggering. The displays of love and family and closeness coupled with short days and long, cold nights can hit a lot of us.

❄️ In all this heartache and hardship it’s important to let people be there for you. To let them show up for you. Care for you. You may not be able to reciprocate exactly the same way, but you deserve to be loved even when you may feel unlovable.

❄️ It’s no doubt very hard to allow someone in when you’re already in a hard place. And it takes courage to trust someone’s intentions. But most of the time, your people mean well. You’re worthy of being loved even when you’re in a tough place.

👋🏽 What I mean by this is:

If you are trying to support someone’s emotions and validate them, it’s not a time to share your unsolicited opinion on whether you agree or not. It’s not about you.

Or

If someone’s actions or behaviors are suddenly different, it doesn’t mean it’s personal or related to you. They could just be having an off day or dealing with something else. It’s not about you.

Or

If you’re with someone who doesn’t seem too happy or too excited to be doing said activity with you, it doesn’t mean they’re not having a good time. They may be dealing with things internally. It’s not about you.

All of which means the same thing: let’s stop assuming it’s about us and personalizing things. Harder to do than simply say that, but if we can pause before we decide what someone else’s actions mean, we may realize we likely don’t have a strong basis for assigning certain meaning to those actions.

🍁 Negative feelings have a bad reputation mostly because they’re perceived as a choice to be negative. Feelings are valid and we can choose to be happy but pretending we don’t feel hard feelings is pretty self defeating, and makes moving from that feeling harder.

🍁 Negative feelings deserve to be felt and processed. When we rush through them or are pressured to “not focus” on them, we don’t always give them and ourselves the space to really feel them.

🍁 There’s a general belief that if you’re not passed hard feelings “quickly” (and I say that as quickly is subjective), the perception is that someone is “dwelling.” This can be pretty harmful to believe and often reflects the headspace e of the one who holds this belief—and that headspace is very uncomfortable with negative feelings.
