Sense of Place brings together five creative practices across the rooms of Atelier Seventy Six, creating an exhibition to be experienced rather than simply looked at.

A HOUSE EXPERIENCED THROUGH THE SENSES
It’s still a house.
That was important to us.

Rather than creating a traditional gallery exhibition, Sense of Place unfolds through the rooms of Atelier Seventy Six, allowing the work to sit alongside furniture, materials, food, scent, sound and the everyday architecture of a home.

The living room becomes a place for taste, where Emma Louise Payne’s Wasted collection brings together reclaimed ceramics, food, drink and conversation.

The house then leads you upstairs, through sound, touch, sight and scent, with each contributor creating a different sensory encounter.
Amechi Mandi’s textiles introduce colour, pattern and tactility. Mentsen’s lighting shifts the atmosphere of the basement. Studio Above&Below’s Quantum Trace brings sound, light and technology into the domestic environment, almost becoming a sound machine and bedside light. Omamori’s bespoke incense moves quietly through the house, connecting the spaces through fragrance.

Together, the works create a single narrative about how sensory experience shapes our understanding of home.
A place to look at, but also to listen to, touch, taste and smell.

OPENING TOMORROW | SENSE OF PLACE

Tomorrow we open the doors to Sense of Place at Atelier Seventy Six for London Design Festival.
The exhibition explores what happens when we move beyond designing for the eye and begin to consider how we experience a place through all five senses.

Five creative practices come together across the rooms of the house:
Amechi Mandi | Touch
The Asafo collection, bringing colour, pattern, texture and Ghanaian visual storytelling into the domestic environment.
Emma Louise Payne | Taste
Wasted, a collection of reclaimed ceramic tableware activated through food, drink and hospitality.
Mentsen | Sight
A sculptural lighting installation exploring perception, form and the changing qualities of light.
Omamori | Scent
A bespoke incense created especially for Atelier Seventy Six, carrying the sensory language of the exhibition through fragrance.
Studio Above&Below | Sound
Quantum Trace, an immersive installation translating quantum computation through light, projection, sound and custom software.

Each installation occupies its own room within the house, creating a series of distinct sensory environments. Moving from one space to another, visitors encounter different ways of experiencing design through sight, sound, touch, taste and scent.

MEET MENTSEN

Mentsen is a London-based design practice founded by Japanese designers Yasuyuki Sakurai and Risa Sano. Working somewhere between craft and industrial design, the studio moves across furniture, lighting, product design and one-off handmade objects.

Their approach is grounded in a search for efficiency and elegance, balanced with material resourcefulness and a hint of humour. Alongside commercial and cultural projects, Mentsen also works directly with architects, interior designers and private commissioners through bespoke making in London.

For Sense of Place, Mentsen explores Sight through a sculptural lighting installation that considers perception, form and the changing qualities of light.

The work asks us to look again, and to notice how light can alter the way we experience a room.

SIGHT

For Sense of Place, Mentsen responds to Sight with a sculptural lighting installation designed to change the atmosphere and perception of the room around it.

The work asks us to slow down and notice light as a material in itself, its intensity, softness, shadows, reflections and relationship to the architecture around it.

LIGHT, FORM & MATERIAL

Mentsen’s work moves between furniture, lighting and objects.
The studio’s wider practice balances industrial production with craft and bespoke making, often exploring materials and processes, and sometime these to remain visible within the final object.

Their lighting work is particularly interested in the relationship between light and physical presence.

Projects such as Mela and Melina (@handandeyestudio) explore glass, form and diffusion, using simple shapes to create a changing relationship between illuminated and unlit objects.

For Sense of Place, this interest in perception becomes central.

Sight is not simply about seeing an object. It is about noticing how light changes a room, how shadows alter surfaces, and how our perception shifts as we move through a space.
