Just wrapped recording gourd banjo for Michael Abels, one of the great modern film composers (Get Out, Us, Nope, Omar) on a secret project. It’s expected to come out in 2027. Stoked to work with this amazing human! ———— #banjo #gourdbanjo #blackbanjo #folkmusic @menziesinstruments

OH MY GOURD, I made a banjo @menziesinstruments in Bull Bay, Jamaica! 🙌🏽🪕 Making a banjo in the Caribbean that holds so much history of the instrument through the Transatlantic Slave Trade is an experience that isn’t easily explained but it is definitely felt. I attended Jeff Menzies’ “The Art of Gourd Banjo Making” workshop with my friend Erik Tosten @oakcliffguitars He handles all of my repairs @swanstrings and I’m looking forward to doing more work together in the near future! I also met some new friends along the way on this beautiful journey! Take me BACK! 😭😂 #MentoMusic #GourdBanjo #OhMyGourd #Gourdgeous #BullBay

I got the moving blues. The paradox of loving Chattanooga, a place that has provided so much beauty and evolution in our lives - and simultaneously being so excited and ready for the good things coming in North Carolina is not lost on me. They exist at the same time. Love emoting on this beautiful gourd banjo made by my good buddy @menziesinstruments - “Wandering Boy” #movingblues #farewellchattanooga #wanderingboy #menziesinstruments #wanderingboy

@menziesinstruments Are you interested in making a traditional Jamaican gourd banjo? 🪕 Contact Jeff Menzies to join one of his monthly workshops in Bull Bay, just outside Kingston. I had the pleasure of being guided through the process of creating this beautiful instrument, and it’s a truly special experience.

The length of time I’ve wanted a gourd banjo can be measured in decades. Why didn’t I scratch this itch sooner? Beats me, but this itch is almost scratched! Those low tones are compliments of Jeff Menzies and this gourd banjo. #banjo #jamaica #gourd #bluemahoe #menzies

Carlton Scarlett is a singer, songwriter and guitarist who has been at it in the music business for over 50 years, not just in Jamaica but worldwide as a founding and continuing member of The Heptones. He’s a human rights activist, an environmentalist, a former teacher of Afro-Centric Studies, and the only person who has dogs as pets that we came across in Jamaica, the rest run wild. He lives in Kingston, but his good friend had a place on the coast in St. Elizabeth, and that’s where he would retreat to create music, where he kept all of his instruments. A wall of water completely engulfed the house, and his musical belongings. Thankfully, our good friends at @berlyguitars came through with a beautiful Semi-Hollow Body Chibson, and our team at ReString donated a beautiful Avalon acoustic, as well as a brand new Spark 40 amp to get things going again. This would not have been possible without our partners at @bobmarleyfoundation, #oneloveinaction ❤️🇯🇲 Follow Carlton: @dehdehblacks 📷: @kellymlacy #restringjamaica #restringappalachia #bobmarleyfoundation #theheptones

For the last 4 months, we’ve been taking in applications, vetting, communicating, acquiring instrument and gear, fundraising, coordinating shipping and logistics to bring musical aid to Jamaican musicians whose lives and careers were hit by Hurricane Melissa last October. Somehow, we made it happen internationally for the first time, and boy did we learn a lot. This would not have been possible without our partners: @guitarcenterfoundation @bobmarleyfoundation @sekologistics We are so grateful to be in this position and help musicians. More to share over the coming weeks about this trip 🇯🇲 🎥: @kellymlacy Featuring @menziesinstruments #restringjamaica #restringappalachia #bobmarleyfoundation #guitarcentermusicfoundation #hurricanemelissa
