This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the APTA NY Board of Directors meeting in Saratoga. It was a wonderful learning experience to meet the important figures involved in pushing our profession forward and discussing legislative topics. I had the pleasure of meeting several other student interns from various districts in NY and I am so excited for us to be the new generation of PT’s!

Somehow, the years that felt endless went by in a blink.

Forever grateful for the people in these photos, and those not, who were along for the journey—the people who supported me, the people who struggled alongside me, and the dog who never left my side.

I’ve been introducing myself as “Lindsey from Physical Therapy” for months now, but I finally got to dress up and prove it. 🎓

🎓Student Spotlight 🎓Physical therapy students get the chance to draw on their past work experiences every day, as Jessica Niemczura from Mercy College discovered during her affiliation at the Orthopedic Physical Therapy Center (OPTC) with her CI Jonathan Yu, PT, DPT. “Having a background in personal training and being a physical therapy aide for 6 years allowed me to connect with patients,” she explained. “It’s important to be clear and respectful when communicating with patients, as it helps bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and human connection.”

Jessica’s time at the OPTC included delivering an inservice on Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). Great work Jessica!

A neurological issue manifesting as a knee & forearm problem?

After some rehab on his left arm, Dec began having pain in his right knee. Worked with tons of outstanding PTs and other doctors, but no avail.

Why did palpating his left forearm cause the knee pain to go away? I wish I had a better answer for you than just a “blanket” neurological or fascial problem.

Consortiums members Dr. Nikki Gawronski (New York Medical College), Dr. Dama Fleming (Rutgers), Dr. Kristen Mooney (Binghamton University), Brittany Simpson (Utica), and Dr. Kathy Ryan (Mercy), et al conducted a survey of DCE to determine the level of satisfaction with established clinical assessment tools.

The authors found that overall there was a 72% satisfaction rate with the utilized assessment tool. However, the CIET had a higher satisfaction rate (100%) than the CPI 3.0 (68%).

This spring, we have an incredible opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic with fellow students from the School of Health and Natural Sciences, including programs in Physician Assistant Studies, Communication Disorders, and Occupational Therapy Studies.

For five days, we’ll be working together to provide free healthcare services to hundreds of underserved individuals who otherwise have limited access to medical care. Our team’s goal is to make a positive, lasting impact on the lives of those we serve.
