Research indicates that weight loss dieting is one of the leading risk factors for the development of eating disorders.
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀
Dieting is not only ineffective for long term weight loss, it can result in malnutrition and starvation, and can certainly lead many people into an eating disorder: binge eating, bulimia, anorexia, body dissatisfaction and low self-esteem. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀
For individuals who are genetically predisposed to eating disorders, dieting can often be the catalyst for heightened obsessions and fears about food and weight.

The dietary changes and exercise regimens that many people adhere to in order to lose weight would be considered highly problematic, even eating disorder behaviour, in someone considered thin.
...
Deliberately going hungry, restricting calories to below one's daily energy needs, counting out almonds, always saying no to food that you really want to eat and exercising purely to burn off calories would be seen by most people as unhealthy, or at least potentially problematic, behaviours in thin people.
...
Therefore, why on earth does our culture think it's ok to subject people in larger bodies to such behaviours? This is even more pertinent when you consider that these behaviours rarely lead to long-term weight loss and in many people, result in weight gain over time.
...
If you want to hear more about this, listen to Ragen's podcast on life unrestricted. She has some very intelligent and eye opening things to say.

@ragenchastain also just did another podcast with @chr1styharrison on Food Psych which is also worth a listen!

While I completely agree with this quote, I had a very thought provoking discussion with a good friend and fellow dietitian yesterday around the fact there are many truths when it comes to being human.
...
If you are a person who maintains a smaller body through any of the below means and you are completely at ease with this, and you feel it serves you well with no mental or physical harm, then no one else has the right to suggest you do otherwise.
...
But for those who find these methods of weight control unhelpful, unsustainable, unpleasant or simply ineffective, then perhaps this is your truth.
...
I am listening to Sarah Harry's @bodypositiveyoga podcast interview with @meret_boxler from "Life. Unrestricted." - which is brilliant - and she talks about her many attempts at weighing less and how they failed her.

Hey, lovely radicals... Podcast time!

This woman surely knows what she is doing:
Dr. Stacey Rosenfeld, a psychotherapist specializing in disordered eating and body image issues, got me to tell her almost my entire story! I am still amazed by this talk.
Her book "Does Every Woman Have an Eating Disorder?" is a must-read, in my opinion.
I couldn’t help but think: When 75% of all women are disordered eaters, the book title seems a painfully brilliant use of a rhetorical question. I hope you’ll love this conversation as much as I did!
As always, with love. <3
