Friends of FLORA deserve a permanent place on our feed.

So many of the businesses and partners who support this event are local businesses, and asking them to be part of what makes FLORA so special has never been about asking for things for free, because time and resources are valuable.

A dear friend recently reminded me that a community is more than an event. It is a group of people connected by shared interests, values, and a sense of place.

I am incredibly proud of the community that has grown around FLORA, and of the one I have worked to build here over the last decade. It is a community fueled by supporting one another, championing education and creativity, showing up for each other, and leaving egos at the door.

Every year, I try to infuse a little bit of what makes Nantucket so special into FLORA. That means bringing the people, products, and businesses I genuinely love into our attendees’ experience. Sometimes that looks like a partnership. Sometimes it means purchasing from a local business. Sometimes it means introducing 25 people who have traveled from all corners of the country to a place or person I hope they will remember long after they leave, and support their craft at home.

FLORA takes an entire year to plan, and next week we get to welcome those 25 people to our island and share a little of what makes this place so extraordinary.

We could not do it without our community around us.

To our Friends of FLORA: thank you for believing in what we are building, for showing up, and for helping us share a little piece of home with everyone who comes here.

We love you. ♡ Friends of FLORA graphic featuring the logos of local Nantucket businesses, brands, and creative partners who support FLORA 2026, presented in FLORA’s warm, botanical-inspired branding.

Revealing the commissioned painting for our home library -
“The Reader” by @merhanson 📖 🎨

Meredith Hanson is a very dear friend who I met my first summer here on Nantucket back in 2013. She was the talented artist behind my painted daffodil suit in 2020 plus all the watercolor projects we did for @nantucketbooks for Elin Hilderbrand pre-order campaigns; the Nantucket and St. John watercolor maps, the Swan Song endpapers, and so on.

I knew I wanted an original oil painting to hang over the fireplace tying in the moodiness of the colors in the library. I envisioned a guy reading on Tom Nevers Beach and Mer took it from there. I’m so blown away by what she accomplished with light. The hint of light radiating down and highlighting the reader is such a metaphor for the epiphanies one can realize from reading.

If you ever need a custom painting project, make sure to consider @merhanson. She is one of the most talented people I know and she will not rest until your project is perfect.

I know I’m one happy reader and I can’t wait to stare at this piece every time I find myself in the room. Thank you @merhanson for your talent, time, and friendship. We love you!

Goldenrod is one of our favorite signs that the season is changing.

October’s feature in The Language of the Flowers by @hafsalewis of @hafsaandco, goldenrod brings its signature yellow to fields, dunes and roadsides across Nantucket each fall.

September 11, 2001. The first two photos were taken from an 8th floor hotel window at the Tribeca Grand Hotel where we were staying. The rest were taken from the hotel roof which we reached from a staircase from the 8th floor. When Tower 7 fell (it’s the shorter building in front of the North Tower) it knocked out the power in lower Manhattan. You can see the photo where it had been to the right of 40 Worth and the next photo where it is gone. The last frame is of Camilo Cruz, Alan Chambers, and me - we had assembled at the hotel on 9/10 for the Johnnie Walker “Keep Walking” campaign (to be held on 9/11) to honor people who had courageously fought against all odds to accomplish their personal and professional goals. It was a day none of us will ever forget. 📸 The first 2 photos taken by Michelle Chambers, the rest taken by Alan, Camilo, and me.
