“Do you understand and accept that exactly 48 hours after Return you will be considered dead by community and by law?

“Yes.”

In a world far more regenerated than our own, a woman hazes between this life and the next as she transforms into a coral reef, aided by her son. Illustrated by Merijn Hos (@merijnhos), Nicky DC (@nick.cheng.524) shows us what it feels like to insist on living–and dying–by your convictions and hopes for a better world. 🪸

It’s a story of tradition, growth and ultimately, love.

“Soon, you will lose me. You shouldn’t feel that way, but you do.”

🔗 Read this story on web (🌐tractorbeam.earth) or substack (link in bio) and follow along for more stories of soil and water as they roll out over the next several weeks!

Nicky DC loves bugs and a good time. (Most soilpunk bio ever?!?!)

Merjin Hos is an artist, Illustrator and occasional Art Director based in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Recurring themes in his work include melancholy and a longing for the past, combined with a great curiosity about the future. These themes are also reflected in his use of materials, combining analog and digital techniques. Merijn is always curious about new technology. He often finds that his most exciting work results from experimentation and working in unknown territory.

“The science of consciousness & the ethics of moral consideration — what we have learned from rats & monkeys & humans — will have to guide us as we meet artificial minds,” @guitchounts writes at the link in our bio.

Head there to see how he believes we should treat AI systems, given that we may never know for sure whether they are or could become conscious.
