East Doc Market for rough cuts and finished films (March 23, 2026)

We’re excited to announce the selected projects for this year’s East Doc Market – a key international meeting point for documentary filmmakers from Central and Eastern Europe and global decision-makers.

For the first time, the East Doc Market expands into two distinct sections as part of the East Doc Platform:
➡︎ Rough cuts & finished films – March 23, 2026
➡︎ Films in development & production – March 24–25, 2026

Today, we’re introducing the projects in the rough cuts and finished films section – powerful stories reflecting the diversity of contemporary documentary filmmaking, from migration and political repression to gender identity, trauma, and resilience in times of social change.

👉 Discover the full list of selected projects via the link in our bio.

Congratulations to all the teams! 💥

Stills from the shortfilm “Baa-baa!”

A goat, a kid, and totally unpredictable weather — the holy trinity of chaos. And somehow... filmmaking magic.
What a wild, wonderful ride this one was. Massive thanks to Teresa (our fearless director) for trusting me on our very first Estonian-funded short film.
Visually, this piece took a lot of inspiration from Martin Parr — the king of making the mundane look interesting. His use of color, characters and “accidentally on purpose” aesthetics. Everything looks kinda staged, but it’s all about catching real life in the weirdest, most perfect way.
We ran with that idea — but leaned into fiction. No handhelds, no chaos in camerawork. Just still, observant frames that feel like little photos come to life. A big shift for me, as I’m usually all about the moving camera. That beauty of stillness all worked thanks to our amazing art dep (Eliisabet Merete Leppoja) and unstoppable costume dep (Anu Rieberg,). You brought this strange, colorful (Grade - Ivar Taim) world to life.

And of course, the goat… MVP.

Cam/light crew - kummardus!

Short experimental film “Warm Apathy”

Well, I’m excited to share some glimpses of this piece because I guess it came out in the most honest way. We Estonians often find ourselves in the middle of the winter just cold, grumpy and sometimes funny enough… little depressed. It’s the darkness which sneaks on us, but there is still light out there somewhere… in someones warm hands.
I’ve always thought about how to make a picture of that feeling and lucky enough someone shared the same instincts. I consider myself privileged that I was approached by this young rising star of a director Karoliina with a genius idea of portraying the feelings of winter, longing and love by copying some of the paintings that reflected what she felt. What a beautiful way of getting inspired.
It was a totally new way of approaching where nothing was rushed and we just created from a void (besides copying). That means 0 budget, tea, cookies and passion. It didn’t feel like a production but a camp.

I remember that we really didn’t know what we were doing but that camera just rolled, on feelings and vibe.
It all was a great exercise and gave more confidence of creating just small pieces of something, because we film animals need to say something from time to time.
For the first time I tried editing and sound design. The experimental way of just messing around with clips and sounds just felt like a childrens playfield again. No walls no rules and just freedom of creation. That’s the honest way in my opinion when you 100% just have fun with it and don’t think too much.

Beloved crew: Pirte, Theodor, Merka, Niki, Andreas, Karoliina, What a good way of passing the ice.
