ZIO PEPPE (MACELLERIA & BRACERIA) - Martina Franca, Puglia, Italy 🇮🇹 This stop is not on any tourist guide, in fact no one here speaks English and the place is filled with mostly locals. 🙌🏻 Why? Zio Peppe is a butcher shop that also serves a full meal for €15...no there isn’t a typo, it’s €15. What else? The meal is entirely Keto (as long as of course you tell them no bread). 🥩 Being that he is a butcher - he starts you off with the best cold cuts and cheeses, then followed by a slow braised beef stew in local tomato sauce, with a finale of a plate of mixed grilled sausages and classic “bombette”, which are meat roll-ups from this area specifically. 🧀 Bombette can be stuffed with anything from cheese to herbs, sky’s the limit! 😋 Thank you Peppe! This stop will always be a MUST when in this beautiful part of Italy.

OSTERIA DA PICO – Matera, Basilicata, Italy 👍🏻 We think that the best way to delve into a new region is to explore the local food. 🍽 Tonight we were treated to a wonderful meal and even tried new ingredients and preparations we had never encountered before. To start of course we had a cheese and charchuterie board of all local products, a standout was the pecorino and the spicy salame which balanced out the spice with wild herbs. 🐷 We were intrigued by the plate of local peppers on the menu and we are super glad we tried them – called peperone crusco, it is a regional variety of sweet pepper that has been dried completely and then flash fried. 😋 Crunchy and delicious! To follow we asked what the most traditional meat dishes they had were and chose accordingly. First lamb stewed in its own jus and lampascioni – we also had never heard of this ingredient – these are hyacinth flower bulbs which resemble baby onions and taste like nothing we had ever tried before, bitter and with a sweet aftertaste. 👨🏻‍🍳 Finally, grilled boneless pork chops (capocollo), with local sautéed mushrooms and the same crunchy crusco peppers, garnished some powdered homemade chili powder to round the flavor profile. To add some extra greens we had their savory pan fried chickory. 🙌🏻 It was an incredible treat to try new things in such a wonderful history laden setting, as the restaurant is dug into the cliffside, in the remnants of an ancient home. We are loving Basilicata! ❤️
