Dear Elvis,

I’m reaching deep into my heart to say these words, and everything I’m about to say is well and truly personal. You are one of my favorite athletes ever, and my favorite player to have played for the Columbus Blue Jackets. You define resilience, playing with a passion, and intensity more than any other goaltender I’ve ever witnessed.

I remember cheering you on from before the beginning, from when you first entered the league, and couldn’t win a game in your first 10 starts. Yet in the most poetic way; you won your first game against our former franchise goalie, and turned the tables so quickly that night, that nobody could’ve seen what was to follow. You went on to have my favorite run of any athlete I’ve had the privilege of spectating (and I was around for Linsanity), going 12-2-0, with 5 shutouts in span of 8 games. It felt unreal, and I will never forget how for those 2 weeks: you ruled the league.

You’ve been plagued with tragedy and multiple obstacles since then, losing multiple people close to your soul, enduring mental warfare year after year, and not being the same goaltender since your rookie year. Despite that, you still showed up and gave everything you had. It was such a joy to see you represent Latvia in the Olympics.

You have everything man, the swagger, the name, the audaciousness, and the spirit of a warrior. Watching you both play on the ice and act off the ice, always felt like I was watching a sporting embodiment of me: an emotional dude who wore his heart on his sleeve, yet 100% real and determined to fight for the best possible outcome every day. It’s hard to be that kind of person in hockey; you managed to be a very vocal and professional voice, in a sport where such expressiveness is exceedingly rare and in most cases frowned upon. It spoke a lot to me during my formative years as a kid from Australia, and it made my connection with you grow stronger despite not knowing you personally.

I truly cannot picture you in another jersey other than Union blue. For me you are a legend, and one of my biggest inspirations as far as people go. Not just athletes, people.

Go be great Elvis, thanks for everything ❤️

The day I’ve been dreading as a hockey fan has finally come, my favorite goalie, went to his new team and to say my heart is shattered is an understatement. You would not believe the amount of people who reached out yesterday asking me if I was okay. No matter what, I stuck behind my goalie and I would’ve continued to do so as long as he was with us. I hope Elvis knows just how much he meant to Columbus, to the fans who adored him, and while I’m a Columbus girl through and through, I’ll always root for Toronto when he’s in goal 🥅

Hockey has a funny way of bringing people into your life beyond the game.

Grateful for the friendships our boys have made and for the support Elvis always showed our LHSS family.

Wishing Elvis and his family nothing but success in Toronto.

I genuinely have no words. I am so so heartbroken to see you go. Your time at Colombus had lots of up and downs but I will never forget how good of a person you are. I wish you all the best in Toronto and you will still be my favourite goalie. ❤️🇱🇻 @merzly #merzlikins #elvismerzlikins #nhlgirly #nhl #toronto
