As a Brussels native who regularly makes the pilgrimage from wherever I’m living, I’m here to dispute the baseless dismissal of my city as a lesser Paris or a tamer Amsterdam. Beneath the bureaucratic hum lies the oddball charm of Franco-Dutch lovechild that evades lazy classification.

Nothing is more dizzying than Brussels architecture: Brutalism collides with Baroque, and Art Nouveau appears at random amidst the two. The city offers a visual break from the smooth, frictionless urban minimalism that has become ubiquitous in major cities (you know what I’m referring to). Neighbourhoods shapeshift before your eyes, and each street corner reveals something different from the previous. It discloses itself only by foot, so let yourself stray and be rewarded with hidden cocktail bars, buzzing terraces and conversations that stretch out late into cobblestoned nights.

Other cities are predictable; clichéd. This one even catches me off guard, sometimes. Some things seem eternal: tangled streets, century-old brasseries and speakeasies. Others shift overnight: new wine bars and bakeries appear in a blink and make me question my native status. This guide captures that versatility, melding childhood favourites with spots that opened last week.

Brussels doesn’t pine for your attention. It reveals itself only to a select few. As the old adage goes, if you know, you know. Lucky for you, dear readers, I know—and now, so will you. You’re welcome.
