The art of sitting on the floor

Somewhere along the way, much of the world decided sitting on the floor was something to grow out of. But in many cultures it was never abandoned, and there is a quiet wisdom in it that Western interiors are only now rediscovering.

There is something instinctively grounding about being closer to the floor. Conversation softens, postures relax, and the whole atmosphere becomes more intimate. A room designed for floor sitting invites people to stay a while in a way chairs rarely do.

This is where the zabuton comes in. A traditional Japanese floor cushion with nearly a thousand years of history, it was once reserved for emperors and revered monks before becoming central to omotenashi, the Japanese culture of hospitality. Folded from cotton by hand and finished with tassels for good luck, it makes sitting on the floor comfortable enough to linger.

Sitting on the floor isn’t about doing without furniture. It is about a lower, calmer relationship with a room, closer to the ground beneath you.
