One of the most important roles of an upper belt isn’t submitting lower belts—it’s helping them grow.

A good upper belt knows when to push the pace, when to allow movement, and when to create opportunities for learning. Every roll doesn’t have to be a showcase of dominance. Sometimes the best thing you can give a lower belt is a chance to work through positions, recognize mistakes, and develop confidence.

For lower belts, getting caught, swept, and submitted is part of the process. Those moments aren’t failures—they’re lessons. Every tough round with an experienced training partner is an opportunity to improve your timing, awareness, and understanding of Jiu Jitsu.

The best academies are built on a culture where higher belts invest in those coming up behind them. Today’s white belt is tomorrow’s training partner, competitor, coach, and teammate.

Be the upper belt you needed when you first started.

Today Jax wrestled in the Texas Freestyle & Greco State Championship Tournament. He shook off a couple losses, listened to his coaches, and stood on business. He ended the season as a State placer, taking 2nd in Greco and 3rd in Freestyle. He had a chance to wrestle for True Second in Freestyle, but the kid that lost in the finals was the kid he had already lost to… oh well. We’ll get em next year, or the year after, or the year after lol #nevergiveup Proud of you, STUD! Looking forward to the offseason training with @texaselitewrestling and Folkstyle preseason! #godfamilywrestling #texasusawrestling #bettereveryday #earnednotgiven

This past weekend Jax wrestled at the TX-North Barrientos Memorial Freestyle/Greco Wrestling Tournament in Anna, TX. Just like any other youth wrestler, he made mistakes, had missed opportunities, and got injured, however, he was able to reign in his emotions, keep his composure, and move past the injury to take🥇 in both. He showed true grit, determination, and perseverance, and that is all we ask. Wrestling is hard. You don’t have anyone else to rely on. Your coaches and parents can only do so much. When you’re on the mat, it’s all you. This kid is on the right path. Next year, we compete in the national level. No big trophies, no podiums, and nothing to brag about is being promised… the only promise is, he’s bringing that grit, determination, and perseverance, and will be there to continue his journey to wherever it takes him. Hats off to you, son. You can’t teach that stuff!! #youthwrestling #texas #usawrestling #goals #mindset
