Last week, GUGAMS and @mexlawgu had the pleasure of welcoming Mtra. María del Carmen Urías Palma @carmenuriasp to Georgetown for a conversation on public communication, democracy, and the role of institutions in strengthening public trust. 🇲🇽

We are very grateful to Mtra. Urías Palma for sharing her experience and insights with our community, and to everyone who joined us for the conversation.

We look forward to continuing to create spaces that bring the Georgetown community closer to the people, institutions, and conversations shaping Mexico today.

Each year, members of Georgetown Law’s Mexican Law Students Association (@mexlawgu) build an ofrenda in McDonough Hall to celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a tradition that honors the lives of loved ones who have passed. 🕯️

“Día de los Muertos is a beautiful reminder that death isn’t the end of our connection with those we love,” shared Vladimir Zaragoza, L’26. “It’s a time to celebrate their lives instead of mourning their loss, and to share stories, music, and food that bring their memories close again.”

For Sandra Portillo, L’26, bringing this tradition to Georgetown Law is a way to share something deeply meaningful from her Mexican culture with the community: “Law school is not only about academics, it’s also about people, values, and identity. I hope that when others see or contribute to the ofrenda, they understand that Día de los Muertos is about love, unity, and respect for life.”

This year’s altar featured traditional elements like vibrant flowers, candles, papel picado, pan de muerto, candy, and favorite snacks to honor the things loved ones enjoyed in life. “We also included photos of pets, because they are part of our families, too,” Portillo added.

In addition to MexLaw’s ofrenda, the Georgetown Law Library’s Marketing and Public Relations Forum created a beautiful altar in the Robert L. Oakley Reading Room as part of a year-round initiative to honor holidays from diverse traditions.

Thank you to MexLaw and the Georgetown Law Library staff for sharing this meaningful tradition with our community! A colorful Dia De Los Muertos altar in the Georgetown Law Library’s Robert L. Oakley Reading Room adorned with orange marigold flower chains, colorful papel picado banners, and an array of decorations on a white lace tablecloth.

🇲🇽 On September 27, we celebrated the Mexican and Mexican-American community with GUGAMS and @mexlawgu.
We hosted the Hon. Rodrigo Mendivil, Consul of Mexico in Washington, D.C., for a conversation on consular work, U.S.–Mexico ties, and the impact of the Mexican community in the U.S.

We closed the evening joyfully with a live presentation by @bfmgeorgetown, and wrapped up with Mexican food and great company.

Thanks for joining us!
