This was just what I needed - a morale boost. It’s not always easy to stay positive. Fortunately, beneficial learning and productivity are my pick-me-ups.

When @kirshia_ocean_educator contacted me, asking if I’d participate in this training, the only answer was yes. Uhhh, a program that offers everything ocean? Everything needed to fill my knowledge gaps? Of course! Well, it turned out even better than expected. I came out of the training feeling as though I can meaningfully contribute to society, in ways I enjoy.

Many hands make light work, and the best part of the program was the people - my fellow trainees, speakers and facilitators. We were all from different backgrounds. Everyone seemed like an expert at something. Everyone had something to teach the group. I felt as though I was meeting celebs! Haha, at least my kind of professional, eco-warrior celebrities. But don’t worry I played it cool.

It’s super satisfying to be part of a community where we dedicate our lives to restoring the health of the Ocean and Earth. Forever grateful.

P L E T T E N B E R G B A Y 🧜🏽‍♀️✨

I just spent the last week in Plett for the Plett Ocean festival, which extends into the Marine Symposium where I was MC - driven by @ecmpe North end, this Ford Territory was a dream drive!

🧜🏽‍♀️ Our first event was the @adopt_a_swimmer_plett x @theblackmermaid_foundation Snorkel Day - always incredible taking a group of little humans into the water, and beyond special when adults move past fear, learning to swim and sharing in this incredible day together! @louiseauersperg is incredible 💙 and always so thankful for the volunteers that show up heart full to help make this journey seamless! We donated copies of Zandi’s Song in Afrikaans and Xhosa which is always so special!

🧜🏽‍♀️ Our second event was a book reading at a library KwaNokuthula where @theblackmermaid_foundation donated a few copies of @zandis_song in Xhosa too!

Alongside the Marine Symposium were incredible moments of connection,

🧜🏽‍♀️ Dinners were so heart-filled!
✨ The Fatfish had the most beautiful warm ambience,
✨ The Palms a must do - the margaritas were fantastic!
✨ The Lookout Deck with its views and great service was amaze!
✨ Enrico’s had the best pizza and pasta and the most raw ocean views.. an absolute sunset treat!

I spent a few days @christianalodge Lodge - an absolute stunner! 10/10! The food felt freshly made, incredible ocean facing views, there’s 3 pools on the property which is just beyond but also, a quiet space for a beautiful pause, cannot wait to go back 💙

A dream formed in 2020,
A dream in waiting from 2023,
A dream realised in 2025,

Time is an interesting facet of life, desperate hope, desperate wanting to create change… but then when you pause, and hold with time, she brings all things at the right time…not early, not late, just in time.

The opening of the Ocean Hub is a huge step towards expanding our programs and the work we do, access will always be a huge part of the work, representation remains crucial in how we shape the ocean scape for our learners, it’s crucial that it looks like them too, as drivers of change, innovators, bearers of futures unimagined for the African child,

Our partners through World Oceans Month - @diveteam_ct for sponsoring wetsuits and snorkel kits for our learners - this is a huge cost for us and so appreciative to be able to extend that back to the kids and the work, @ioi_southernafrica , the phenomenal @kirshia_ocean_educator and her team for expanding the Western rocky shores for our learners - learning practically in the field, @captain_fanplastic for telling powerful stories that make ocean literacy fun! SAEON AND SAPRI for the researchers that came out to share about their work while making virtual reality accessible to our learners, Dr Ragoasha for taking the time out of her busy schedule to bring into the room the depths of our oceans and what this means with her calling as a traditional healer,

The most incredible thing happened today - we opened our first ever Ocean Hub! Based in Philippi, in partnership with @philippivillageza 💙

This huge dream has been in the works for 2 years in conversation, has been in my heart from when we started our work in Cape Town… and it finally happened today!!!

The hope?
To bring the Oceans home… we want our kids to go out to sea and learn and explore these beautiful oceans - but we also want them to come home and share even more of this joy, in their community - learning and creating together ✨IN✨ the community,

We cannot wait to share more in the days to come - we’ve got exciting events planned for World Oceans Month and cannot wait to share the days ahead with you!

How do you care for something you’ve never seen before?
How do you care about the impacts of pollution, climate change and marine wildlife?
How do you get to know more about accessible careers in the ocean space?

Through excursions like this one, aquariums can be a hard take for a lot of people but understanding the disproportionate access for many Black and Brown learners to ever see marine wildlife in person, never mind in the wild, I know aquariums are important,

🧜🏽‍♀️ They expand the voices we hear and see as expert knowledge,
🧜🏽‍♀️ They contribute different perspectives to how things are done but most importantly,
🧜🏽‍♀️ Diversity brings richness of thought, it expands ways of doing things, and solutions to the challenges we face globally,

We had the opportunity to take 20 learners from Langa to the Two Oceans Aquarium for an educational and eye-opening experience.

We learned about plastic, penguins, turtles, and sharks, and were even able to witness the rare shark feeding show.

The learners were amazed to discover that the ‘flowers’ under the sea are actually animals 💙💙

This was a powerful learning experience for all involved, and we are grateful to the Two Oceans Aquarium, Langa Community Advice Center, our team, and our volunteers for making it possible 💙🧜🏽‍♀️✨
