My first lesson with Mignon Dunn was supposed to be on 9/11. She was the one who called me and told me not to come downtown and to go turn on the news. After that dramatic initiation into NYC, she welcomed Peter and me into her studio and her family. So many meals, parties, Thanksgivings, glasses of champagne -- she has always gathered around her a devoted crew of singers, pianists, conductors, doggies, and lovers of opera and of her. She has cooked for us, entertained us, loved us, held us to her exacting standards, and given us a safe home in the city. She has not lived on the coattails of her starry international career; her one tiny box of photos and reviews lived in the back of a closet. "Been there, done that, Schatzie" she'd say, only revealing the most hilarious, wonderful stories after we had plied her with enough wine. She has never stopped working hard and learning, and while at 95 she is finally retiring from teaching at Manhattan School of Music, I don't believe for one moment she will stop growing. She's off to her next adventure, and while I will visit her in Minneapolis, NYC will never be the same without her. She is part of the fabric of my life here, interwoven for over two decades. I can't even begin to express my gratitude for this incredible artist and human.

#throwbackthursday is normally for nostalgia - bringing to mind a sweet memory, but today there’s a heavy layer of sadness.

My heart breaks for Maui - for the land, for her people, for all that was lost and the families forever changed. 💔

But the spirit of #aloha can never be destroyed. Aloha ‘Oe, Lahaina as we knew you. You will rebuild and grow and thrive again 🌈🌺🤙🏽

Thank you for all the birthday greetings, messages and calls! I had a fantastic weekend in NYC,
singing and enjoying spontaneous gatherings and meet ups with friends. The kind of friends where you dive right in, pick up where you left off, laughing, commiserating, digging deep. I so appreciate that. And then I returned home to a sweet family party that even included my brother. I am grateful for another turn around this star, challenges and delight alike!

I miss being a performer! This concert was among the most rewarding, magical experiences I've had as a performing artist. A benefit fundraiser after Hurricane Sandy, produced and directed by the amazing Mauricio Trejo, combining visual art, jazz and beautiful singing. Opportunities like this may happen once in a lifetime and I treasure that I was apart of this beautiful evening.
Now, as I sing in "virtual" concerts in the comfort of my living room, I yearn for the world of performance art to be alive again and feel grateful and blessed for the experiences I've had.
