Model Design

This class is an introduction to the shop, working with different tools and materials and proper planning in your model making process.

Project 1: bread clip

In this project each student was provided 1 bread clip and asked to use their calipers to measure all the details.
Then they multiplied X’s 5 and plotted their bread clip at the new scale. They used their drawing to create a chip board template and then used that template as a pattern to mark a sheet of styrene. Students used knives and straight edges and/or the scroll saw to extract their clip from the styrene sheet.

The project teaches scaling , drafting and pattern making as well as the use of specific tools and materials.

Extra Credit: decorate your bread clip to make it look as authentic as possible.

“Culture, Humanities and Lived Experience.” That’s exactly where I fit, so the title of the session in which I presented research was absolutely perfect.

For the Fourth @keanuniversity Faculty Research Conference, the mid-century modern architecture of Acadiana, a region of Southwest Louisiana, was my focus.

Talking about the remarkable work on which I focus while hopefully fostering preservation efforts is a real pleasure.

Celebrating the 2025–2026 League Mentorship Cohort!

The League Mentorship pairs public architecture school students from @citytech_architecture, @spitzerschool_ccny, @mgckean, and @njit_hillier with New York–based built environment professionals. Now in its eighth iteration, this year’s program matched 95 students with 95 working architects and designers for one-on-one advising, mutual learning, and intergenerational community building.

The cohort launched with an October orientation at City Tech. A visit to the downtown office of Sciame Construction marked the midpoint, and last week, mentors and mentees gathered at Gensler’s New York office for an End of Year celebration. Throughout the academic year, mentors and mentees self-organized mentorship sessions.

This year also saw the inaugural Mentor Committee, which organized a “So... What Does An Architect Actually Do?” panel discussion, an online resume/portfolio review, and a tour of the Maplewood Memorial Library in Maplewood, New Jersey.

Next year’s call for mentors will be announced in July. To learn more, join us at “Drawing Together,” the League’s 145th Annual Meeting & Party, where representatives from the Next Generation programs, including the League Mentorship, will highlight the League’s work to support built environment students and professionals over the many stages of their professional lives. Post 1 of 2: While teaching an undergrad intensive editorial design class to students in Rome, I gave them a challenge: by the end of the second day of class, they had to choose the subject of their magazine—in Italian—and be passionate enough about it to build an entire editorial world around it. No pressure. 😉

The result? A collection of magazines filled with curiosity, personality, and point of view. Their projects have been edited here for length, but the spirit of each one shines through.

Student work in order of appearance:
• Branden Chi — Creativa (Creative)
• Yamileth Espinoza — Caffé Cultura (Coffee Culture)
• Jessenia Fuentes — Essenza (Essence)
• Alejandra Zevallos — Pelle (Leather)

Shout-outs to my amazing guest speakers @janameierroberts___ad @andycowles and @SusannaHayward and my guest critics @mccandlissandcampbell

Thanks also to @keanuniversity, @mgc.rome, and @rosemgonnella for inviting me to teach what I love in a city I love.
