“Through this experiment, I attempted to create new Sadu patterns inspired by the writings and stories I composed, as well as my conversations with the Kuwaiti Sadu weavers. In doing so, I developed patterns that narrate these stories in a new way, using my freeform Arabic calligraphy along with other illustrations from our culture in Kuwait. The name A Thousand and One Stories is inspired by the magical stories that we used to hear about our land, rich with beautiful and enchanting elements.” - Mahmoud Shaker Mahmoud, Artist
Mahmoud Shaker Mahmoud is a multidisciplinary artist and author whose work centers on the complexities of human emotion, memory, and self-reflection. Across six works, A Thousand and One Stories explores the figure of Al Dhafra, a title of honor given to women master weavers. Through repeated symbols, poetry, and creative writing, Mahmoud reflects on storytelling, craftsmanship, and the quiet strength of tradition through an invention or reinterpretation of motifs that celebrate the creativity and resilience embodied by the master weavers.

في معرض Beyond the weave مع @saduhouse و @mei_artgallery
في العاصمة واشنطن.

تستلهم الأعمال من نقوش السدو لتصنع منها حكايات مكتوبة بلسان الناسجات و رسوم تبرز مدى براعة الكويتيين في حياكة السدو، بإضافة العنصر الحُداثي على هذا الارث.

انطلق المعرض هذا الاسبوع بالتزامن مع احتفالات سفارة دولة الكويت في الولايات المتحدة بالأعياد الوطنية، ويستمر المعرض في العاصمة واشنطن لغاية شهر أغسطس ٢٠٢٦م.

The Middle East Institute Arts and Culture Center was honored to open its latest exhibition, Beyond the Weave: Contemporary Dialogues with AlSadu, in a special evening celebrating Kuwait’s rich textile heritage and the enduring power of cultural exchange.

Curated by the AlSadu Society, an organization dedicated to preserving and advancing Kuwait’s Sadu weaving traditions, the exhibition brings together works by 12 talented artists who participated in the Sadu Art and Design Initiative (SADI) residency. Each piece reinterprets the language of Sadu textiles through innovative contemporary practices, weaving together heritage and modern artistic expression.

We were deeply honored by the inspiring remarks from H.E. Ambassador Sheikha Al-Zain Al-Sabah, Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to the United States, and Sheikha Bibi Duaij Al-Sabah, Chairperson of AlSadu Society, as well as from MEI’s leadership, President Amb. (ret) Stuart Jones and Kate Seelye, MEI’s Vice President of Arts and Culture, whose words reflected the cultural significance of this exhibition and the enduring ties between Kuwait and the United States. The evening also featured a thoughtful panel discussion moderated by Lyne Sneige, MEI’s Senior Director of the Arts and Culture Center, with participating artists Fatima AlBader, Jasem AlSanea, and Munirah AlShami. They shared with the audience personal reflections on their creative processes and their engagement with Sadu heritage in contemporary practice.

The full house brought together former U.S. ambassadors to Kuwait and other dignitaries, cultural leaders, artists, and devoted arts lovers in a warm and celebratory atmosphere. We extend our sincere gratitude to AlSadu Society and our sponsor, the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters in Kuwait, for their invaluable partnership and support in making this exhibition possible. We are grateful to all who joined us for this memorable evening and look forward to welcoming even more visitors to experience Beyond the Weave on display through August 23, 2026.

Sadu, a traditional weaving practice shaped by nomadic desert life and the ingenuity of women makers, translates generations of knowledge into disciplined bands of vivid geometry. Historically woven from sheep and camel wool for tents and furnishings, Sadu’s motifs form a visual language of movement, memory, and identity—elevating a practical necessity into a lasting cultural symbol.

The Sadu Art and Design Initiative (SADI), initiated by Kuwait’s AlSadu Society, engages this cultural heritage as both subject and structure. Since 2016, the residency has invited artists from diverse disciplines to work with Sadu’s inherited knowledge and evolving forms as a foundation for contemporary exploration, reinterpreting its patterns, materials, and meanings for the present.

This exhibition features the work of 12 Kuwaiti artists who have participated in those inspiring residencies. The works that emerge move between distilled abstraction and immersive inquiry, tracing Sadu across image, object, and experience. Together, they form an evolving record of exchange between past and present, affirming that tradition remains vital not through preservation alone, but through continuous dialogue with new voices and vision.
