Creative Director @suttondavison shared with us the story behind Marcus King’s “Darling Blue” album cover:

“The visual world around ‘Darling Blue’ originated from a conversation I had with Marcus about the album that was, at the time, still in its infant stages. He said he wanted this collection of songs to be “a soundtrack to guide you through the peaks and valleys of my mind – loss, heartache, and deep love for my darling Blue Ridge Mountains.”

I was immediately struck by that personification of a physical place. The idea of referring to his homeland as his “Darling” was so strange and compelling. The peaks and valleys of his mind being perfectly matched by the mountains, and the word “blue” holding dual meaning – representing both the mental health journey that MK has walked, as well as the great beauty of the place he calls home.

We shot the visuals at a location that, until I saw it, didn’t seem real. “Ghost Town in the Sky” was a fully functional wild-west themed amusement park built ontop of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the 1960’s, overlooking Maggie Valley, NC. Though long-closed down, the bones are still there. Marcus talked heavily about visiting the park as a child, and how the spirit of that place is one of the things he most associates with home. It was equal parts eerie and beautiful.

The lifting of a curtain is an event that all performers live through every single night on stage. We wanted to juxtapose it in a setting like this as picture of giving the listener access to see the full picture of both the physical place and the mental place that has made Marcus who he is.”

“Darling Blue” by @realmarcusking and the Marcus King Band

No one like MK. A true once-in-a-generation artist. Every time you think he can’t go higher, he does that and more.

Grateful for the trust to direct and design this campaign, for the unreal creatives who helped bring it to life, and for the incredible team that I get to do it all with every day.
