Insta family: We are starting a series entitled "Everyday Elders" to celebrate the contributions, activities and lives of Seniors. We will give this group a platform and voice. First up, Lawrence Orihuela @miamihammer

Larry, a.k.a. Dr. O, holds bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in education from @FloridaInternationalUniversity. He worked as a math teacher in district schools prior to his retirement. He's also a former @Starbucks barrista and a part-time actor. He prioritizes physical fitness, and derives much pleasure from regular exercise.

Larry got into fitness after a total knee replacement. His surgeon said that the average life span of a total knee replacement was approximately 10-15 years, but if the patient strengthened the muscles surrounding the knee joint, then the lifespan of the replacement would increase substantially. This was a defining moment in Lawrence’s life as it led to the start of his fitness journey - at age 62.

Fast forward 12 years, and Larry is in the best shape of his life. He trains three times a week with a personal trainer and bike rides between 20 and 30 miles per day. He’s dropped 30 pounds since and even reversed his pre-diabetic diagnosis. Larry’s discipline proves that it is never too late to get active and change your life around.

By the way, he is 74!
