Who has *not* felt the impact of climate change?

Getting of the metro in DC I came across this art installation (by @julio_lulo), and these paintings struck me. I had to stand close and look at them.

The first painting, of the flood, made my heart beat faster. It looked like my parents' house in Florida, where last summer's hurricane season brought unprecedented flooding, and we are bracing for yet another wild and wet storm season in Florida.

The fires reminded me of when our family lived in Australia, and also when we lived in California. Smoke from wildfires would cancel sports practice regularly and disrupt everything. Once a fire broke out so close that we could see them from our front yard. Even once the fire was put out the scorched hills served as a reminder for months.

No place is immune from the effects, and what that looks like will be different for each of us.

Corporations are still allowed to pollute the only planet we've got in the name of profit. Late-stage capitalism is ruining the world.

Amelia Walton (b. 1861) was a 7-year-old child when she was caught with someone else’s horse just 2 years after the Civil War and the emancipation of slaves in Mississippi.

Since she was formerly enslaved, the court that handled the plantation owner’s complaint against her was The Mississippi Freedman’s Bureau, also known as The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands.

https://www.archives.gov/research/african-americans/freedmens-bureau

The Bureau, a type of formal court system, was established by an act of Congress in 1866. The Bureau’s stated mission was to “provide relief and help formerly enslaved people become self-sufficient” by managing labor and legal disputes and claims between former slave owners and the formerly enslaved.

Amelia Walton’s courage comes to life in this document when she testifies that she is innocent, and my interpretation channels her testimony.

This is the earliest documentary evidence of Amelia Walton’s existence. But it isn’t the only one.

What I’ve found means Amelia’s story lives, and it will continue...
