Taking us back to last week, when we got to see Kainani during Menlo’s OAKtoberfest weekend! She wrestled on Friday evening, then performed two Polynesian dances on Saturday.🤼‍♀️🌺

Love seeing Kainani getting to learn about the different cultures of Polynesia through Menlo’s Pacific Islander Club! Here she is dancing to “Kari Kari,” a Rapa Nui song from Easter Island, at OAKtoberfest alongside her wrestling teammates, Melissa and Martha, and her dorm building ʻOhana, Poʻo!🎃

So happy to see her dancing again, having fun, and making memories with her new ʻOhana at Menlo!❤️

You can hear in Makana’s cheering just how emotional she was seeing her little sister dance again. Both of my girls always talk about how much they miss hula and competing with our hula ‘ohana, so watching Kainani get back to something that has always meant so much to our family was really special. Since I was born in Hawai‘i and Victor grew up there, we’ve always wanted our girls to know and appreciate the island life we grew up loving: the culture, the traditions, and, most of all, the meaning of ‘ohana. Hula was such a special way to share all of that with them.🌺

That’s why I was happy to learn that Kainani joined Menlo’s Pacific Islander Club. She gets to dance again, reconnect with a part of herself, and keep learning about the different Polynesian cultures and traditions. What makes me even happier is knowing she now has both her wrestling ‘ohana and her PIC ‘ohana. Two wonderful groups of people she gets to share her college journey with. As a mom, it means so much knowing she’s surrounded by people who share her passions and make her feel like she belongs. A little piece of home, even when she’s miles away. And seeing Makana get so emotional watching her sister dance again brought me to tears too.❤️

*Thankful to her wrestling teammates that came to support her and watch her performances. Ⓜ️

Kainani got her first win on the mat tonight! Her very first college match and her very first win as a college athlete!

It may have been Menlo College’s OAKtoberfest Intersquad Blue vs. White Dual - a friendly dual to give the athletes’ families a little preview of what’s in store this season, but she didn’t miss a beat! She went right into her usual warm-up routine, got herself in the zone, and watched every match before hers, studying, learning, and strategizing.

Normally, Kai wrestles pretty early in the lineup, but tonight she was the last match for the women’s team. And let me tell you, the butterflies I had while waiting to see her back on the mat for the first time since May were intense! My anxiety was through the roof!

They showcased freestyle wrestling tonight, so of course, like every time she steps onto the mat, I worried about her getting hurt. Just a mom being a mom!

But Kai went out there, did her thing, and got her arm raised tonight!

I couldn’t be happier for her, and I’m so grateful our AK/SF ʻOhana got to be there to experience this moment with her. And yes, it was absolutely worth the drive from OC to watch my baby girl back on the mat!

There’s nothing like watching your child do something she loves and seeing how much she’s grown along the way.

So proud of you, Kai! I can’t wait to see what this new chapter of wrestling has in store for you! And you already know I’m planning to be back cheering on my Nani at the Menlo Open in November… wink, wink!

Would you believe me if I told you that one of Kainani’s pediatricians, who happens to be a triathlete herself, once told Kai to ask herself three questions after every match?

1. Did you do your best?
2. Did you have fun?
3. Did you poop yourself?

Well, she did! And the answers have always been YES… except for #3! Although, there may have been a few rare occasions when that answer was a “maybe!” 😂

Believe it or not, Kai has carried those three questions with her for the past year. After every practice, training session, match, and tournament, she still asks herself those same questions.

A little shout-out to her pediatrician for giving Kai such a simple but important piece of life advice! Who would’ve thought three funny questions could leave such a lasting impression? I love seeing strong women encouraging and empowering young women, not just in sports but in life. Sometimes the smallest conversations make the biggest impact. ❤️

It's OAKtoberfest Weekend, Menlo’s intersquad wrestling showcase is this evening, and the beginning of a whole new chapter for our Kai!

Nani, I know you’ve been stressing and getting in your own head lately, but don’t be so hard on yourself. Not everything will go as planned, and that’s okay! You’re learning and growing, and that’s what matters. Win or lose, we’re proud of you no matter what!

Go out there, wrestle your heart out, have fun with your teammates, and enjoy every moment. You have nothing to prove to us. Just keep doing your best and loving what you do. The rest will fall into place! WE LOVE YOU NANI-GIRL!🌺❤️Ⓜ️ #menlowomenswrestlingmcwa #lfgKainani

Kainani, today we celebrate you! 🎓❤️

Watching you graduate on Thursday and seeing you walk through the procession gave me butterflies in my stomach; the happy kind. It was one of those moments I’ll never forget. Seeing you cross that stage made me reflect on how much you’ve grown into a beautiful young adult and all the hard work that brought you to this day.

We have seen the countless hours you’ve spent studying, the countless art projects, the dedication you’ve shown in wrestling, and the sacrifices you’ve made competing weekend after weekend. Through it all, you’ve continued to carry yourself with strength, determination, and that beautiful smile.

We are beyond proud of the young woman you have become. Your hard work, resilience, and commitment have brought you to this moment, and you have earned every bit of it. Never let anyone make you doubt that.

As you begin your next chapter at Menlo College in the Fall, know that we believe in you completely. We can’t wait to see the experiences you’ll have, the goals you’ll achieve, and the impact you’ll make both in the classroom and on the wrestling mat. We know you’ll continue to give 120% in everything you do. #gooaks Ⓜ️

Congratulations, Kainani! Keep chasing your dreams, stay true to yourself, and never stop believing in how capable you are. We love you for eternity and are so proud of you! You did it BABYGIRL! 🌺 ❤️🎓🤼‍♀️

I cried silently the moment I opened Victor’s text. 🤍
Daddy, my heart still aches every time I think about this place - the beach on Kauai where we laid you to rest almost two years ago. A place that holds both so much sadness and so much peace at the same time. I know this is where you wanted to be… back home, in the ocean you loved so much, where you found so much joy fishing and where you worked so hard to put food on our table. I miss you more than words could ever explain. I miss your voice, the smell of the kitchen when you were cooking, the giggles from the girls when you’d tell them your silly Papa Jimmy jokes, and your hugs. But most of all, I miss your presence in our home. I pray you continue to watch over us every single day. I long to see your face and hold your hands again. I miss you more with each passing day. I'll be home soon for a visit, I promise. I love you forever. ❤️
