A jazz quartet. A 22-piece chamber orchestra. One musical world. 🌊

On Into The Aquasphere, the quartet and orchestra aren’t alternating or separated voices. They form one ensemble, with the freedom of the quartet moving within the scale and colour of the orchestra.

Here’s a glimpse inside the sessions and how that idea came to life.

🎧 Into The Aquasphere arrives October 23 on Alma Records. Pre-save now, link in bio.

thinking about my friend Cris — they were a force that brought so much beauty into the world! 🌎 🦅🎻

first we need to see something done, before we can really begin to imagine how an idea can move through us. Derksen’s album Orchestral Pow Wow (2015) was that lightening bolt of an idea for me — ⚡️I was stunned. It allowed me to imagine what indigenous songs to could do up against the heights of western art music. in a scene that glorifies the past, you were so today & offered us a better vision for tomorrow. wisəki-wəliwən CD for always encouraging us to question musical supremacy, breaking open the doors of the concert hall & shinning a light on the beauty of our songs. what i do now is not possible if there wasn’t you. ilu. Cris was surrounded by a broad community of artists, curators & makers: my thoughts are with this community!

these beautiful photos, by @coreyisenor & @greggoryclark, are of the tour we just finished with the national arts centre orchestra @nac.cna in

we had the chance to visit four amazing communities; ekwpahak, eskasoni, kjipuktuk, & mtaban. we not only joined in song with some of the country’s finest orchestral musicians [led by @alexander_shelley] but also the amazingly talented language warrior @emma_stevens_music ❗️wowwwww.

JD rhythm section was holding it down as always @haydrummer & @charlesjamesmusic -and- @aaroncomeau made all our journeys smooth ones. So grateful for all who brought this tour to life🌸

What a dreamscape this year’s festival has been!

Our festival finale, where world-class artistry met intimate acoustics for one last unforgettable performance.

The program included:
🎶 Concerto in F Major by Antonio Vivaldi
🎶 Three Songs for Soprano and String Orchestra by Osvaldo Golijov
🎶 Sinfonia Concertante by W.A. Mozart

The atmosphere was electric as musicians and audiences came together to celebrate the culmination of an incredible week of music.

A heartfelt thank you to all our festival musicians and the SweetWater community — volunteers, staff, audiences, and supporters — who made this year’s festival truly special.

Another big bravo to our exquisite festival musicians:

Edwin Huizinga, violin
Emily Nebel, violin
Sheila Jaffe, violin
Bridget Walsh, violin
Gabe Roth, violin
