FROM METAMORPHOSIS TO WAWEA
(WE ARE JUST WHAT WE ARE) | a lil peek

a documentary about Rully Mallay, trans activist, founder of Waria Crisis Center (WCC), a trans-led shelter for elderly trans women in Yogyakarta, recipient of the HERO Award for Transgender Hero 2022 by APCOM Foundation, a friend, a caregiver, a Mami to many, and someone who has dedicated her life, gave up her career as a civil servant, one of the most secured jobs in Indonesia, to serve those who have been neglected by the state and pushed to the margins of society.

this is what we've been cooking, a rough cut, little peek into what i have been researching and documenting in Jogja these past months. i've been blessed to receive grants and scholarships from my university and a queer foundation in germany, but i am reaching a deadlock financing my vision, the funds are drying up, and there is still one unexpected (€445) bill i didn't see coming that i just don't have.

this is a story of resilience and survival from indonesia, from the Global South, that rarely makes it into the global conversation about queer history. especially right now, when the indonesian government has classified our community as a threat to national security, creating fear, anxiety, and deep uncertainty, and fuelling a wave of local regulations that criminalize our community and make it harder every day for trans and queer people to simply exist, to move freely, and to meet their most basic needs.

get to know her. read our full story in the link in bio. and if you can support us in finishing this piece dedicated to the trans elders of yogyakarta and their stories, we'd really appreciate it <3
