Howdy! I'm Mike but friends call me Tyke. I'm a friendly, pansexual warehouse worker that occasionally cooks for fun. I also train in Sumo wrestling.

The R/L sound in りis tricky, because it’s neither.

It’s an interesting phoneme that mixes the tongue start position of the English D sound, but the tongue control of the English R sound to produce a “L-ish” kind of sound.

The eighth movement of the Sumo Health Exercises: Fusegi-no-kata.

This form teaches a lot, primarily redirection and yielding to pressure to initiate counter-offense.

The lateral shift of bodyweight underlines a major concept: getting off the line of attack.

A common adage in sumo is that you can never win moving backwards. So defensive maneuvers must include lateral and forward movement to retain position in the ring and continue the contest.

Moving backwards generally accelerates your defeat.

With many kimarite “baked into” the kata, this form is incredibly useful for mental reps as well.

Nothing is more important in sumo than how you move.

Sumo is all about the body.

Your relationship to your body shows up in your sumo.

Sumo, like all martial arts, reveals what you believe about yourself.

I think sumo helps begin the process of believing better things.

Get out of your head.
Get into your body.
Try sumo.

At our club, we focus primarily on the basics.

We also use drills and games to develop skills, positional awareness, intentionality in footwork, or responses to specific stimuli.

These drills and games, which we affectionately call “Fuujin Flows,” prepare us physically for full-contact “Raijin Rounds” for those with competitive aspirations. (@ncsumo 😉)
