my brother and i directed our third music video. we had a proper team this time so i have to do a proper post. so grateful for every person involved. so much effort, and so many rehearsals went into making our vision come to life. thank you to everyone a part of it, you went above and beyond. and thanks to the 120 extras, you guys rock. i’d recommend any single one of these ppl 10x over.

We spent our earlier sessions figuring out our body’s relationship with tension. Working with a lot of dancers, I’ve found that they can just sink into positions without necessarily having anything “turn on.” We played around two variables time + tension.

If I asked Michael to go into a deep squat, he’d drop into position, he’d feel pressure in his knee. But if we slowed down movements until our bodies understood what it was asked of - the eccentric phase - there’d be no pain.

At times, I’d ask Michael to create as much tension as he could and then pull back until we’ve found the sweet spot between contraction and relaxation. & sometimes I have to tell other clients to chill all the way out and then can add tension back in ~

Here’s a drill I like to use after mastering how to create and release tension with dynamic movement.

Once we’ve managed your pain, a lot of our sessions is me gradually exposing you to movements that once felt scary. & now to helping you get out of your head and build confidence as we progress those movements.

One way I do that is by using a tempo. Instead of overthinking the movement itself, you’re focused on following the beat. & dancers love to catch a beat ~

hellooo you don’t need a barbell on your back with 20 things hanging off of it and do 50 jumps to get a good calf workout.

These are a few simple cues I use to help my clients get more out of a basic heel raise.

First, I add a contralateral knee reach. It helps bring them back to midline so the whole leg starts working together instead of letting passive structures do the work.

Then I bring the knee back to neutral while keeping pressure through the big toe. Now we’re balanced from the foot all the way up to the hip, which usually means better muscle recruitment and a heel raise that actually does what we want it to do.

I’ve grown such an appreciation for dancers and dance itself over the past few years. A dancer’s body and mind are both so complex and fluid that these sessions make the rehab process the most creative for me.

I’ve learned so much from talking with @tawnyaknguyen about how movement, training, and rehab translate to people who can mirror movement so well and what it really means to move with understanding and intention.

It’s been so sick watching Michael take what he’s learned from Tawnya’s training and connect the dots between rehab and dance. When your mind and body are working together, you fr can do anything!
