✨️Final Student Takeover post from @michael_demarte ✨️

One of the best parts of this journey has been the people.

Graduate school is more than classes and deadlines — it’s shared experiences, new challenges, unforgettable adventures, and friendships built along the way. From time on the water to earning certifications, celebrating wins, and making memories with an incredible cohort, these moments have been just as meaningful as anything learned in the classroom.

Grateful for the laughs, the support, and the reminder that the journey is always better when shared with good people.

✨️ Oh-fish-al Student Takeover continues from @michael_demarte 🎣🎣🎣🎉

What started with a love for fishing has grown into my capstone project: building a tool that helps connect recreation, technology, and conservation.

My project is focused on creating a platform for anglers that makes it easier to identify species, understand regulations, and contribute to better stewardship of our coastal ecosystems. Along the way, inspiration has come from everywhere — first catches, time on the water, seafood systems, entrepreneurship, late nights at the computer, whiteboard sessions, and learning how ideas become reality.

This process has shown me that innovation often starts with personal experience. Sometimes the best solutions come from combining what you love with what the world needs.

✨️Student Takeover from Michael @michael_demarte
✨️
From beach volleyball courts to marathon finish lines, from family time to fieldwork, my time at Scripps Institution of Oceanography has been shaped by the people, places, and experiences that keep me grounded and motivated.

I’m currently a graduate student in the MAS program, passionate about ocean conservation, innovation, and building solutions that connect people more deeply to the marine world. Whether I’m at the beach, hiking, presenting ideas, or spending time with the people I care about most, every part of life outside the classroom helps shape the work I do inside it.

Grateful to be part of a community that pushes me to grow while staying true to who I am. More to come this week.

🪨🤘🎸 Learning California natural history at Torrey Pines State Park 🙌

MBCers took to the field again today with Dr. Norris to examine the geologic records preserved in the ocean side cliffs of southern California. Students are getting the deep history understanding of marine Geology, while also soaking up the sunshine and scanning for dolphins 🙌
