One of my favorite things about traveling the world for work and talks, is the amazing and talented people I get to meet.

I am especially grateful for the immense talent and passion in Jewish communities everywhere.

Thank you, Michael, for some extra special photogenic moments in Hamburg 📸❤️

More to come!

Abby Stein, Hamburg 2023.

Abby Stein is a Jewish educator, author, speaker, and activist. She was born and raised in a Hasidic family of rabbinic descent in New York City, and is a direct descendant of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidic Judaism. In 2015 Abby came out as a woman of trans experience. Since coming out, she has been working to raise support and awareness for trans rights and those leaving Ultra-Orthodoxy.

Many thanks to @tamara_loewenstein for bringing Abby and me together.

Already a year ago.

Installation views of the collaborative presentation of the works "Forms of Representation" and "House of Assembly" by @paula_markert and @michael_kohls at @mkgfreiraum, May 2022.

In this collaborative project, the photographers address questions about the visibility and invisibility of Jewish life in Hamburg. In a video work, Michael Kohls deals with the complexity of Jewish life in Hamburg based on his own Jewish identity. In this first part of an ongoing, research-based photo project, Paula Markert illuminates the significance of religion for political discourse. In the joint presentation in the open space, perspectives are to be changed and thus questions are also to be raised about the direction of view on the equally personal and political topic of religious identity.

The event series was sponsored by #2021JLID - Jüdisches Leben in Deutschland e.V. with funds from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, for Construction and Home Affairs.

Work details:

Upcoming Sunday @michael_kohls and I will be on site from 12-16:00 to present our photo & video installations at @mkgfreiraum in @mkghamburg which will be on display till 25th of May.

In the course of the series "Dis/Continuities. Visibility and Visualization of Jewish Life at the MK&G" as part of the year celebrating 1700 years of Jewish life in Germany, the two photographers Paula Markert and Michael Kohls dealt with the past and present of Jewish life. While Paula Markert in this first chapter of an ongoing project examines forms of remembrance of the Shoah and provenance research of objects looted and expropriated by the Nazi regime, Michael Kohls uses the gymnasium in the former Israelitische Töchterschule in the Karoviertel to ask how Jewish life is practiced today. Both perspectives show through photo and video works which forms of visibility but also invisibility jewish life experiences.

Many thanks Sophie Peterson, @eh_aber_trotzdem & @tilmanwalther from @mkgfreiraum
