Yan's crew stocks industrial sponges by the hundreds on every single job site.

Yan from DPL explains that the wet sponge is especially critical at corners — once concreta starts to set, running a damp sponge along an internal or external corner eliminates the need to sand it, keeping the aggregate intact and the corner sharp without mechanical abrasion.

Most people outside the trade have no idea how physically brutal a full plastering session actually is.

Yan from DPL describes the physical reality of a continuous plaster application: on a 200 square foot wall your arms are already failing by the final section, and on the concreta ceiling at Sushi Samba all six crew members worked three to four hours straight before Yan sent them home because exhausted arms cannot produce a quality finish. There is no pausing mid-wall — the material does not wait.

Site coordination on large commercial plaster jobs requires daily planning the night before — and the ability to scrap that plan entirely by 7am.

Yan from DPL describes his daily routine at Sushi Samba: map out which walls each of his six guys will hit, which coats go where, and which areas to hold because of adjacent trades. When another contractor takes the planned area, the entire day's strategy has to be rebuilt on the fly, section by section.

Every experienced applicator will tell you the same thing: your go-to finish is the one you can execute fastest and most profitably.

Vladimir lays out the honest economics of finish selection for decorative plaster contractors. Applicators naturally push the products they know deepest because comfort translates directly to speed, and speed translates to higher effective hourly rates. Vladimir is clear that this doesn't mean forcing clients into a finish, it means presenting your strongest options and letting them choose. His framing is direct: the product you call your favorite is the one where you can complete more square footage per day and walk away with more money in your pocket.

Six guys knocked out 15,000 square feet of concreta in a month at Sushi Samba West Hollywood.

Yan from DPL walked through the scope: booths, ceilings, planters, and exterior surfaces all finished in concreta, applying two to three coats depending on substrate. The ceiling alone required five scaffolds repositioned throughout the space.

Crew size does not determine production speed on a plaster job — crew cohesion does.

Yan from DPL argues that 15 to 20 applicators on a single project creates an organizational problem that slows everything down. His six-man crew at Sushi Samba functioned because each person knew the others' skill level, knew when to ask for help, and knew when to tackle a section independently — the kind of chemistry that is impossible to build with a large, loosely assembled crew.

Pricing strategy in the decorative plaster market is not about being the cheapest or the most expensive, it is about landing in a position where quality and value align.

Vladimir breaks down the pricing landscape for decorative plaster applicators in the Los Angeles market, noting that some contractors charge as low as $6 per square foot while others command $25. When DPLA was founded, Vladimir made a deliberate choice to position the company in the middle, charging enough to cover costs and justify quality work without pricing out the majority of clients. He notes that all their clients can see DPLA is more expensive than the $6 to $8 operators but stay because the quality, reliability, and speed are demonstrably better.
