OUR TIME TO SHINE ✨

We have a busy day of panels behind us. 🎤

Early morning started with our #didactic film kit-presentation! No 🍿, but a cinematic experience worth every prize, an excursion back in time to all of our twin towns and an overview of how these clips can be taken by teachers in different education formats, switched around, coordinated and turned into open-access playlists on youtube that facilitate and enrich their #teachinggoals . And get people talking and discussing history in local contexts that would not have come about if not for this successful #twinning. 🎞️

🧩 Then it was onto the #youth ! A presentation about how we fit in the project, our social media posts (Which you already know all about and are for sure the absolute highlight of all of your days!), the challenges we faced and how we overcame them to now truly feel as a part of this project, feel heard and appreciated. The answer was - a lot of improvisation and finding great friends to rely on! But above all, being included in ALL parts of the project. 🫶

The afternoon brought about two just as important panels: Communicating the past and teaching history – challenges and innovations & Possibilities and limits of (re-)presenting “European history”!

🤔 An overview of projects and approaches to history with a focus on answering questions that don’t have easy answers. How do we approach #contestedhistory ?How does history encourage reflection and should it answer questions or rather ask them? How to ensure that we not only know what happened but understand why it did? How do we successfully highlight the complexity of narrations and interpretations of history? To foster understanding amongst cultures and nations and localities of today. 🫂

What did all of our panelists have in common? An agreement that in examining the role of history all generations and co-creators should be included: young and old(er), #teachers and #students researchers and decision-makers. Just what #histolab is all about.

[HOUSE OF EUROPEAN HISTORY]

🤔 Remember this Monday? How can you not since we've bombarded you with our updates and reports on our visit to the EU Parliament. 🇪🇺

🏛️ But we haven't mentioned another important part of the Brussels trip - our visit to the House of European History in preparation for our workshop in February.

🗓️ We are proud to announce that we are joining forces with HeH and organizing an important part of our activities with their help in their wonderful space. And we can' wait to show you our program, it just needs a bit more tweaking before it is ready for the big reveal.

🔎 While waiting, join us in discovering what a wonderful institution we are teaming up with!

🤝 "By interpreting history from a European perspective, it connects and compares shared experiences and their diverse interpretations. It aims to initiate learning on transnational perspectives across Europe." - is what HeH is all about. If this sounds familiar, it's because we've truly found kindred souls in each other.

🧬 We all aim to "enhance understanding of European history in all its complexity, to encourage the exchange of ideas and to question assumptions." As they write on their webpage.

🔄 It is a place of exchange and dialogue: in person, virtually, through objects, documents, archival materials, pieces of art, and through thoughtfully curated exhibitions that make us think about our past, our present and our futures. No matter which country you are from, they’ll have a piece of you there!

🔜 Don't miss their NEXT exhibition #throwaway, opening on February 18th. We sure won't miss it when they host us February 22nd to 26th! Mark all of these dates in your calendars for an inspiring venture into the past that also makes us reflect on the NOW and the WILL/MIGHT/WON’T BE.

💎 This hidden gem truly shines and can’t wait for you to discover it. Institutions with such a meaningful mission should never be hidden, so make sure to spread the word😉 #history #eu #europeanhouseofhistory #museum #workshop #brussles #mustsee #travel #education #learning #connected

[URBAN SPACES TAKES ON THE EU PARLIAMENT]
🇪🇺🇪🇺As you were alreable to see on our stories, this Monday was a big one for us!

We had the great honor to present our project at @europeanparliament More precisely at the Committee on Culture and Education chaired by Sabine Verheyen.

Our delegation was invited to join their meeting and to present our project as an example of how EU funds help build the EU identity from bottom up!

What do we mean by that?

Our project was created on the basis of a fruitful cooperation between two historical societies, one in Leverkusen and one in Jülich and Leverkusen’s twin towns. It connects museums, archives, universities, historical societies, high schools and twinning institutions. And is an example of how fostering meaningful connections locally, regionally and trans-nationally can become the foundation for research, historical and educational, and the creation of not only didactic aids, but also manuals for educators, films and a rich cultural and educational program of workshops that creates a diverse community.

It also incorporates different generations into its foundation, involving the youth (us) into every aspect of the project in a way that makes the project meaningful to us. Drawing on our strengths and valuing our inputs. Making us feel proud and privileged. Through our work, we learn, we educate, we build friendships and find a sense of belonging. And that sense of belonging fosters a sense of a common European identity much more efficiently than having just the same currency.

As the fellow project that was presented ( C-city) stated: it is all about building bridges. Through collaboration and the promotion of understanding our differences it builds acceptance locally and from there up, towards that EU identity.

We thank the Erasmus+ program and the Europe for Citizens for their funding, as well as local institutions that have supported us.

In the following weeks we’ll continue to update you on our work and can’t wait to share it with you at our next workshop in Brussels, 22th to 26th of February.

Want to know more? Reach out and stay tuned!
