October 7 will never be just my birthday again. 💜

Today I am grateful for another year of life, while holding the memory of the lives taken on October 7, 2023, the hostages, their families, and a people forever changed by that day.

There are moments when celebration and grief somehow have to exist in the same heart.

Today is one of them.

Sharing October Rain in remembrance, with love, and with the prayer that even through unimaginable darkness, we never stop carrying one another toward the light.

May their memories always be a blessing. 🎗️💜

Even when you can’t find the words, the light inside you has a voice. Let her speak. 💜

Birthday week, song two.

I wrote Hava Nashira during a season when I began to realize there seemed to be room for me only if I stayed quiet.

But silence has never been where my heart can live. When something around me isn’t right, my heart and soul need to speak, sing, question, and make room for what is true.

Maybe that is why I care so deeply about making space for other people.

I write music that invites everyone in. All voices. All backgrounds. People who know every word and people still finding their way.

As a cantor, I do not want to pray for people. I want to pray with them. I want people to feel the prayer, join it, and know that Judaism belongs to them too.

In this song, I begin alone, and then slowly the choir’s beautiful voices join me.

That is the point.

I start the song so others can come with me.

And I am grateful even for some of the hardest seasons, because they brought unexpected gifts too, including one of my favorite people and dearest friends, Michael Ochs, playing with me here.

So much love to Chazan David Lipp and his beautiful choir for bringing this music to life.

From From the Heart, premiering on JLTV next Friday, October 16.

Maybe that is my birthday wish this year: that more of us make room for one another to sing, pray, belong, and fully show up as ourselves. 💜

Hashkiveinu (Michael Hunter Ochs), one of four pieces I had the privilege of singing with the legend, K’vod HaChazzan David Goldstein at Temple Israel of West Palm Beach at the helm of Rabbis Ryan and Carlie Daniels. What an honor it was to spend Yom Kippur there, at the Holy Place where I am also proud to serve as their monthly Cantorial Intern. Over the top✡️🙏🏽

People often ask if I feel exhausted after leading a day full of services from Kol Nidre through Yom
Kippur. While it is demanding and does indeed require lots of stamina both physically and emotionally/spiritually…what I’m really feeling this morning is full. And I’m not referring to the awesome break the fast meal.
Im feeling energized and I’m full of hope, love and of course the feeling of our incredible Peninsula Temple Sholom community singing together.
The sound of our voices filling the sanctuary throughout the day yesterday and Sunday night is a sound and a feeling that will stay with me and carry me for a long time
To our @michaelhunterochs my dear friend and our fabulous Yom Kippur composer/artist in residence, your music and presence truly helped us soar…I can’t wait for our new song collaboration next year.
Rabbis Dan Feder Julia Berg your words lifted us,provoked us and moved us. Leading with you both is such an honor and pleasure. I truly love our team. And Keren Smith our CCO, you truly hold our community with all your caring attention to every single logistic and detail. You do it with so much heart.
Our musical worship team:led by Joe Guthrie, I thank you not only for your incredible talent but the soul you pour into every note.
Jonah Kim the opportunity you gave us to just quiet our minds and focus on on breathe while being transported by your breathtaking playing was truly unforgettable.
Here’s to a wonderful year for all!

In a world that can feel increasingly divided, one ancient mitzvah calls us back to something radical: V’ahavta L’reacha Kamocha—Love your neighbor as yourself.
Listen as Cantorial Soloist Kaylene Cole reminds us that music can elevate this sacred commandment even higher. This is the foundation of our year together: exploring what it truly means to see ourselves in one another, to extend genuine chesed—loving-kindness—even to those we profoundly disagree with.
Join us as we ask the hard questions, celebrate the moments of connection, and do the sacred work of building kehillah rooted in dignity, and compassion. This piece was composed by @michaelhunterochs for Temple Judea #loveyourneighborasyouloveyourself #jewishmusicians #jewishmusic
