HAPPY IFA WORSHIP DAY The Importance of Using Obi to Appease Ifá on Ọsẹ Day Happy Ọsẹ Ifá to everyone. À kú Ọsẹ Ifá. On this blissful day dedicated to Ifá, it is important for us to reflect on the spiritual significance of using Obi (kolanut) as an offering during our five-day Ifá cycle. It is worth noting that, apart from Ṣàngó, most Òrìṣà accept Obi as a mouthpiece—a sacred item through which communication is made and offerings are received. Obi is not just a ritual object; it holds deep symbolic and spiritual meaning in the worship of Ifá. In the sacred Odù Ọ̀kànràn-Ọ̀fún, Ifá reveals one of the reasons Obi is important during Ọsẹ: Bí babaláwo bá mọ̀ọ́rẹ̀ kó mọ́ ní kóbì fún Ifá l’ọ́rọ̀ọ́run Èèyàn ló lóko l’ólódó, ojú tún ń pọ́n-ọn Àwọn ló dífá fún Òrúnmìlà, Ifá yóò sọ àkápọ rẹ̀ dọmọ Njẹ́… Ifá ló fún mi léwù, mo wọ yìí Ifá ló fún mi l’áṣọ, mo mú bọ̀rá Èrò Ẹ̀gbá! Èrò Ìjẹ̀ṣà! Ifá mọ́ lóun ó sọ àkápọ rẹ̀ dọmọ! Translation: If the Babaláwo is truly grateful, Let him always present Obi to Ifá on Ọsẹ days. A person owns a farm near the river, and he still lives in Penury. They cast Ifá for Òrúnmìlà, When he vowed to make his devotee his own child. It is Ifá who gave me the clothes I wear, It is Ifá who gave me honor and dignity. People of Ẹ̀gbá! People of Ìjẹ̀ṣà! Ifá declared he would adopt his devotee as his own child. From this sacred verse, we learn that Obi is not only used to ask for blessings but also serves as a way to express gratitude. By offering Obi to Ifá on Ọsẹ day, we reinforce our bond with the divine—not merely as worshippers but as true children of Ifá. It is an act of devotion that acknowledges the spiritual provisions we receive: clothing, dignity, honor, and divine adoption. May Ifá continue to bless us abundantly and allow us to witness many more Ọsẹ in good health and joy. Aṣẹ ooooo! Ìbà Bàbá mi Ifayemi Elebuibon
