This was a beautiful opportune moment on a wet rainy night when I walked past a large puddle that was so still that it mirrored the Glasshouse Theatre perfectly. Every detail was mirrored exactly, without aberration. The moment was so delicate that a raindrop would have destroyed the entire reflection, so I had to take the photograph very quickly. Much relief that it was captured perfectly. That moment can never be replicated. #LMPA2026

Michael Rayner is a director of Blight Rayner Architecture with Jayson Blight. His recent awards include the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the Australian Urban Design Champion Award and the Property Council of Australia Queensland Industry Impact Award. Notable Blight Rayner projects include the Glasshouse Theatre, the Kangaroo Point Bridge, and the National Rugby Training Centre at Ballymore. Michael is an Adjunct Professor at The University of Queensland and Griffith University, a Board member of the Property Industry Foundation for homeless youth, City Centre Advisor to Brisbane City Council, and a member of the Queensland Urban Design and Places Panel.

The Glasshouse Theatre is effectively Stage 7 of Robin Gibson’s master plan for the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Put to international design competition in 2019 and subsequently awarded to Blight Rayner Architecture and Snøhetta, the 1,500-seat theatre is designed to stage world-class opera, ballet, dance, theatre, symphony, and musicals. The design concept for its glass veil emanated from a poem written by Aboriginal Elder and artist Aunty Lilla Watson, with the main body of the theatre inside aligning with Gibson’s QPAC theatres. The Glasshouse is one of only two fully automated theatres in Australia and has incorporates several innovative acoustic systems unique to the venue.

Last year I sat down with the recipient of the Lord Mayor’s Life Time Achievement Award @michaelraynerarchitect from @blightrayner to talk about what’s happening in Brisbane in the lead up to Olympics, the hot spots that he’s paying attention to and how we can ensure these developments are valuable long after the games have finished.

Michael’s work is renowned across Australia and the world including:

➡️ The Kangaroo Point Bridge

➡️ National Rugby Training Centre

➡️ CityCat Terminal Revamp ➡️ Magistrates Court

➡️ One One One Eagle Street and even the Maritime Museum of China

Comment ‘MICHAEL’ and I’ll send you the link to the full YouTube video!

Blight Rayner is incredibly proud to announce that Michael Rayner has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement award at the 20th Lord Mayor’s Business Awards Gala held last Thursday night. This honour is a testament to his profound impact on shaping Brisbane’s urban and cultural landscape.
In accepting the award, Michael spoke about the values that have guided his career, saying:
“My journey over the past 35 years in Brisbane has largely been about asking myself ‘what else?’. It has been an evolutionary journey first as an architect then adding urban design, then advocacy and policy-influence, then educating aspiring architects, designers, and finally social causes, the latter particularly for homeless youth and victims of domestic violence. Now I do them all but still ask myself ‘where else can I make a positive impact, especially in the face of increasing challenges of climate change, of housing unaffordability and homelessness, and to mental and physical wellbeing in our society?’ I am convinced that design can play a massive role in addressing these issues.”
