GREAT review in new Artforum of the White Columns Annual & my “The Disco Project Installation”! 🕺 LAST WEEK OF THE SHOW! Closes March 5. White Columns, 91 Horatio. Tuesday-Saturday 11am-6pm. 🕺

In print—Johanna Fateman's wonderful review of Mary Manning's terrific White Columns exhibition 'Looking Back' (thank you Mary for including me!) in the new, March 2022 issue of Artforum.

"But Manning's keen, almost decorative curatorial approach isn't the show's only glue. The biggest piece here, with its appealing directness and intermittent audio, becomes an ambient, thematizing force. "The Disco Project Installation” 2021-22, a multiscreen work by dancer-choreographer Neil Greenberg, comprises video documentation of the cathartically elegiac performance it was named for, which premiered at New York's P.S. 122 (now Performance Space New York) in 1995. In it, dancers wearing hot-pink satin shorts and sleeveless tops superbly confuse the vernacular of postmodern concert dance and the libidinal abandon of the club as stretches of silence alternate with pop songs and a projected first-person text narrates Greenberg's life. At one point, the sentence MY BROTHER AND EIGHT OTHER FRIENDS DIED OF AIDS counterpoints Sylvester's euphoric and heartrending "Do Ya Wanna Funk?" falsetto. For gallery presentation, Greenberg adds another layer of commentary on a smaller screen, considering both his ambivalence about reframing this material as art and its bearing on the present. THIS IS NOT MY FIRST PANDEMIC, his metatext notes."

Suddenly I'm a gallery artist?

A video installation of The Disco Project (1995) is included in a group show, From Disco to Disco, at Greene Naftali Gallery that opens tomorrow, Tuesday Feb 2 and runs through Feb 27.

Blow me over with a feather that this is happening, with thanks to Sarah Michelson, who brought The Disco Project to gallery director Carol Greene's attention. The next thing I know I'm working on an installation, creating new text projections to allow for an active exchange with the video documentation, and to situate the work within a gallery setting and circumstance, 25 years later.

The Disco Project (1995) follows Not-About-AIDS-Dance (1994) in the progression of my work, both employing projected text that provides nonfictional information about the lives of the performers. This being the 90s, AIDS played an inescapable role. Fast forward to today's COVID-19 crisis, which from the beginning has reverberated for me with the AIDS pandemic and raised comparisons between the reception with which each has been met (for example: no "Operation Warp Speed" for an HIV vaccine, still). Hence, I've been thinking about both these earlier works, considering ways to revisit them. How great to have this opportunity to exhibit and re-contextualize The Disco Project within a gallery show:

From Disco to Disco
