The Real Toy Story

A photographic project by German photographer Michael Wolf exploring China’s toy manufacturing industry and the lives of the workers behind it.

In 2004, Michael traveled across California in search of all kinds of secondhand toys. He had just two requirements. Each toy had to have a face, allowing him to draw a comparison between the artificial expressions of the toys and the genuine ones of the workers, and each had to be marked “Made in China.” In just thirty days, he collected around 20,000 toys. Once they arrived at his studio in Hong Kong, he sanded down the back of each one and attached a magnet, turning the collection into a massive installation.

The second piece of the puzzle unfolds in China, where he visited five factories and photographed the people making those very same kinds of objects. Inside the factories, workers spent long hours assembling, sewing, and painting toys, often in poorly ventilated spaces and exposed to harmful substances.

Their portraits would later be displayed on large walls, surrounded by a crowd of plastic characters. To get a sense of the scale of these installations, the one at Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, for example, stretched approximately 23 meters in length and 4.5 meters in height, covering more than 100 square meters. Before bringing the installation into museums, he experimented with several prototypes, starting on his refrigerator, then moving to the walls of his home, and eventually creating increasingly large compositions in his studio.

From a conceptual perspective, entire dissertations could be written about this project and Wolf’s work as a whole. One of the central themes running throughout his career is the “individual within the crowd.” Who are they? What desires and aspirations do they hold? Another recurring theme is accumulation, used here as a visual language in its own right. By turning sheer quantity into an expressive element, he allows us to physically experience the scale of overproduction, excess, and waste.

A heartfelt thank you to the Michael Wolf Estate (@michaelwolfarchive) for their dedication to preserving Michael’s work and for allowing me to share it.

Out the Back. Photographic observations from the alleyways of Hong Kong by Michael Wolf, featured in Sociotype Journal Issue 2.

Selected images from the series.

Roaming the streets for hours on end, exploring the little-trodden walkways between those bright façades, Wolf systematically documented a unique urban ecosystem. Although there’s rarely a figure to be seen, the signs of life quietly unfolding are every-where: a makeshift prayer shrine, the drifting smoke of a cigarette break, pot plants precariously strung from windowsills to catch the fleeting shafts of sunlight between the high-rise. In a metropolis of such hyper-density, the alleys provide the opportunity for moments of calm and personal space. As Wolf has said, ‘it’s like looking under the bed. That’s where all the restaurants wash their salad and cut their meat, where all the workers park their little carts and hang up their gloves and mops to dry. Space is at such a commodity, people tend to make public space into their private space.’ - Nic Carter

Back Door

In Back Door, Michael Wolf turned his attention to the narrow alleys and service passages of Hong Kong, spaces usually overlooked in favour of the city’s spectacular skyline.

What initially appears to be urban debris becomes, through Wolf’s precise eye, a study of form, order and accidental design. Cables, doors, containers and discarded objects are transformed into quiet compositions, revealing structure within apparent chaos.

The series reflects Wolf’s enduring interest in how people inhabit, adapt and leave traces within the dense fabric of the city.
